Polka Your Eyes Out

From the organ to the accordion, I'm really mixing it up now. From Frankenmuth, Michigan, apparently home to polka lovers, this is Marv Herzog-Christmas Greetings From Frankenmuth Michigan-Weihnachts Grüsse Aus Frankenmuth Michigan (Herzog Records 3002, Stereo, 1981). One side features carols in English, then the other side features some of the same carols in German. Bronner's Christmas Decorations warrants a mention on the back of this one and they appear to still be in business. Stop by and tell them Ernie sent you.

1. Silver Bells
2. O Come All Ye Faithful
3. White Christmas
4. Joy To The World
5. Away In The Manger
6. Silent Night
7. Leise Rieselt Der Schnee (How Softly The Snow Is Falling)
8. Ihr Kinderlein Kommet (O Children, Come One And All)
9. Süsser Die Glocken Nie Klingen (Sweeter The Bells Never Sounded)
10. O Du Frölige (Blessed And Joyous Christmas Time)
11. Herbei O Ihr Gläubchen (O Come All Ye Faithful)
12. Stille Nacht (Silent Night)

  1. Hey, I've been in Frankenmuth. I've even been in Bronner's. Didn't encounter Marv Herzog, though.

    1. Keep trying, you'll catch him one of these visits. This place is way outside of my usual circle of haunts. :)

    1. If Weird Al has taught us anything over the years, it's that any song can make a good polka!

  3. thank you Ernie for another Christmasrecord to put into my playlist. Something funny to hear German songs with American accent.

  4. I never thanked you for this, specifically. Thank you for this! The few places I think fondly of in Michigan are in this order, Hamtramck, the railroads tracks below the viaduct on West Rd. in Trenton and Bronner's in Frankenmuth. Frankenmuth has probably change in the 23 years I have been away but it was a place of wonder ALL YEAR LONG. If you aren't going to Michigan anytime soon, Do visit their website. https://www.bronners.com/

    1. You're back in the archives now! We have a couple of local year-round Christmas places. They're nice to visit once in a while, but I'm always disappointed that they don't have Christmas music for sale. More than once I've thought about partnering with them on a small selection of vintage Christmas albums with outrageous prices. I can source the records from the thrift stores for $1 each and sell them for $20 each. People will pay that for Goodyear and Firestone Christmas records, then use them strictly as decorations. I should get serious about that one day...

    2. I'll admit, I have made those types of purchases (for the cover alone) but have yet to hang one up. Wall space is at a real premium in this hoarders house. https://www.discogs.com/release/10901958-Various-Das-Sind-Karneval-Hits

    3. Yeah, I've purchased some pretty crazy covers over the years, but I don't think they belong on the wall as art. In the TV series Only Murders In The Building, Steve Martin's character has the four Provocative Percussion albums framed and hanging on his wall. That always seemed sort of odd to me. Maybe I just see them too much to appreciate the artwork in them anymore.

  5. Oh yeah! Pretty sure vol.3 was in my dad's collection. As a teen, I couldn't figure out the draw of the Enoch Light band. I'll have to give them another listen now that I've surpassed my dad by several years. -Organ

    2. It's certainly the sort of thing you have to grow into, like broccoli and brussell sprouts.
