Brothers

I stumbled across a familiar sight in downtown DC at a Navy memorial. I'd seen this seaman before, on another coast, several years ago. The statue above is part of The US Navy Memorial in DC, while the seaman below is at the northern visitor center at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA. The bottom picture might illustrate his position a little bit better.

I've heard there are other copies of this guy out there, perhaps at the WWII Museum in LA? I need to do some research, I guess.

Ahh, Wikipedia to the rescue. The DC version is considered the original, and the others are copies. He's called The Lone Sailor, and the artist is Stanley Bleifeld. Now you know.

Deer Season

I don't think I've mentioned the deer that I spotted in California. I had hoped to spot a bear or two, but I got deer instead. I'm not complaining, mind you. I spotted the spotted fawn above and the two does below in Muir Woods. They were obviously used to humans, since I was less than six feet away in both cases. It was amazing to be able to walk so close to these seldom seen creatures. The doe at the bottom was in a field in Yosemite. As we were driving out, I had just mentioned that it was the time of day you might see deer emerging from the woods to feed, and sure enough, there she was. There were some other yahoos in the field trying to chase her down for whatever reason, so I never got very close.

California (10/50)

California is just weird. What other state has non-alphabetic characters on their license plates? I can hear Ponch and/or Jon calling this in to HQ. "I've got a red 2006 Honda, California tag Juliet, Alpha, Alpha, November, Heart Shape, Lima, Oscar." Perhaps they just have too many cars...

Previous plates: Virginia, Alaska, Connecticut, New York, Maine, Hawaii, Washington, Ohio, Wisconsin.
