7" Versus 12": Battle Royale With Cheese

As a little bit of a side note to today's selection of 12" Christmas singles, I'm excited to bring you this collection both 7" and 12" versions of a handful of Christmas songs so you can compare and contrast. Some of these show off the benefits of the 12" single with an extended mix, and some of these show the drawback of an extended mix on a 12" single. There are also a couple of tracks where I've previously shared out the 12" or 7" version, but I've only got the opposite version here in the download. (You'll have to follow the links to find the other version, but I think that in both cases, the 7" and the 12" offer the exact same cuts. So have a good long listen, and enjoy!

Christmas On The Radio-Part 6

Time for another installment of Christmas production music. A new line this time, Sounds Of Broadcasting, and you'll find that this record is filled with disco! I know you can't get enough of that, so download it and give it a listen. This is Sounds Of Broadcasting #6041 (William B. Tanner 6041, Stereo). Note that this record is also put out by William B. Tanner, but is a completely different series than the others. These guys were putting out a ton of music in whatever style you could possibly want.

Disco Christmas In Canada

Is it my imagination, or am I sharing better Christmas music after the big day than I did before? I guess it depends on what kinda music you like, really.  Some people don't care about disco, but I remember being really excited about this record when I found it, yet here I am sharing it out a few days after Christmas. The day I spotted this record in the stack of another collector at the Salvation Army, I was heartbroken.  I knew it was Christmas disco, and I was pretty sure I'd never seen it before.  The nature of Christmas disco records is that they were recycled pretty frequently, so it's rare to find something that wasn't previously released as something else.  As I watched the other guy carry the record around the store, I got a little depressed.  But then as he examined all the records in his stack, he threw this one back because it was too beat up and he didn't think it was worth anything.  Well, it was worth a lot to me, so I grabbed it, paid my dollar and brought it home.  Doing a little research reveled that it was indeed a reissue of something that had come out earlier, but still not something I had ever seen before. The die-cut cover kind of put me off taking the time to properly scan in the cover for you, but I finally took some time last night to get it cut out and looking half decent.  It's still pretty beat up, and shows a lot of ring wear, but it's still got a lot of charm.  Give it a listen and tell me if it was worth the wait.  This is Montreal Sound-Christmas Disco Party (AKA Canadian Christmas-New Sound Of Xmas) (N.S.B. Montana The Old

I don't think I've given you any disco this year, mostly because I don't think I've found anything new, but here's something from the archives that should scratch that itch.  You may not know the name Vincent Montana, Jr., but you've heard his music.  He was a bigwig involved with the original Philly Sound & a founding member of MFSB, then he went on to found the Salsoul label where he spearheaded Christmas Jollies, the most famous Christmas disco record of all time. Later on he started up a couple other labels, recording this gem along the way.  I first shared this out in 2007, so the sound may be a little rough, but I'm sure there's something here worth listening to.  Please enjoy Montana Orchestra-Merry Christmas (MJS Records MJS 3302, Stereo, 1981) . This may have been a little past the heyday of disco the first time around, but nobody told Montana that disco had died.

Double Disco

The last disco share of the night, I promise.  Last share of the night, too, I've got to go finish my Christmas doings.  A single by Walter Murphy, he of 'Fifth of Beethoven" fame, among other disco classics.  This one seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth, but that's the sort of thing I like to find.  I'm sure I'll see this one pop up in dozens of collections next year, but remember, you got it from me.  This is the Walter Murphy Orchestra-Disco Bells b/w Deck The Halls (Major 7" 45 RPM (No Number), Stereo, 1975).

Disco Down On Christmas Eve

Yes, I am as surprised as you that there are still disco Christmas albums out there that I don't have. Singles, yes, lots, but full albums, that's a shock.  As usually happens with these things though, someone will do a comparison with some other disco Christmas record and determine it's been released 14 times on 13 different labels as 4 different groups.  But maybe not.  It's Christmas Eve, and this could be a minor Christmas miracle.  Like me getting my Christmas shopping done.  It could still happen.  I found this in a stack of dirty records in a dirty store up in Tampa.  I think they wanted $2 for it and I talked them down to $1.  I'm cheap, what can I say.  But no one should have to pay $2 for crummy old disco.  OK, that's enough trash talk, it's really not that bad, even though it's geared towards kids.  I guess that means they leave off the bump and grind noises you might get on a Giorgio Moroder song.  For the kiddies, this is The Kid Stuff Repertory Company-A Disco Christmas (Kid Stuff KSD 024, Stereo, 1979).

A Little Bit Of Disco

From the cracks and crevices of history come this 7" EP courtesy of ShowBiz Pizza (did they turn into Chuck E. Cheese?).  I'm not sure if they're still around, but I'm sure that if they are, you can't buy 7" records there anymore.  I don't even know what to say about this.  It's not really disco, but to a kid back in the day, it may have sounded like disco.  And there's a nice imitation of Elvis on the flip side.  Just download it, you know you want to.  This is The Rock-Afire Explosion-Disco Christmas (Showbiz Pizza Place-Creative Records VI 7" 33 RPM, Stereo, 1982).

You may think I'm all about old vinyl around here, and you'd be right. But the late seventies are now far enough in the past to count as old. And that means disco! Here is the first of several disco Christmas records I've shared out over the years that I want to revisit today. The problem with many of these Christmas disco records is that they are often the same. And I don't just mean they sound the same. They often feature the same performances by the same people, just re-titled and re-sleeved. But I'm going to try and avoid that problem today. Disco Day-Part Four

The next-to-last installment of Christmas Disco Day is this, umm, interestingly covered record by Disco Belles. No idea who the Disco Belles were or are, but they seem to love candy canes. I have to apologize about the quality of the above image. I try to take great pains to give you nice cover scans, but I didn't have much to work with on this one. It was still in the plastic outer sleeve when I got it (slit open though), and some water had gotten in there at some point. So there was lots of discoloration and warpage going on. The record was fine, but the sleeve was about shot. I did the best I could without just faking the whole thing. But you're just interested in the music, right? No problem, go download Disco Belles-Tis The Night To Disco (51 West (CBS) Q 16080, 1979). I should also mention that this was a continuous mix, but I split it into ten individual songs. So if any of the tracks sound like they start or stop abruptly, that's why.
