Peace Be With You

One good carillon record deserves another, and lucky for you I've got one! This time it's from Canada, a land that's far, far away from where I live, and much closer to the North Pole, so maybe they have more Christmas spirit. I spent a few hours in a Canadian airport on the way to Europe this past August, but I don't think I can really say I've been there. I kept buying small things for cash in hopes of getting a looney and a twoney in change (and I'm happy to say I got at least one of each!). Not sure if this record will remind me of the time I spent in the Toronto airport, but maybe. This is Gordon Slater-Peace Tower Christmas (Tapestry/RCA Limited (Canada) GD 7373, Stereo, 1979).

Up In The Tower

I guess you could consider this a local record for me since I can drive to this place, and was just there earlier this year. Bok Tower is built on top of Iron Mountain, the tallest point in central Florida, part of the central ridge of the state that will be the only part left after the polar icecaps melt. And even though it's called a mountain, the elevation there is only 295 feet above mean sea level. One of the displays there at the visitor center is a slice through the state holding the same latitude as the tower, showing the rise from each coast to the middle. It's much to gentle of a slope to even senses most of it as you're driving there, but maybe the last two miles or so you're clearly headed uphill, though not enough to even make the car work harder. Anyhow, you get the point. This is a recording of the carillon that's in the tower there. They don't offer tours in the tower but I'd love to see in there. The music you hear in the park is mostly prerecorded but I'm sure there are days when an actual carillonneur plays tunes. I like to think that they play this record at Christmastime. They went with a B&W cover because that's the way this label does all their covers. Most of them are woodcuts or old line art so it usually doesn't matter, but in this case you're missing out on not seeing the color of the tower and the green of the lush gardens around. I'll throw in a picture from our recent visit so you can get an idea of what you're missing.

Ring Bells In Stereo

As we move on through December, I hope you're enjoying some of these older shares that I'm bringing back in remastered form, or in the case of this one, in a stereo version when I had a mono copy previously.  Having sound come out of both speakers is kinda nice, especially when you're listening to the soothing sounds of the carillon and handbells. You might want to save this one for Christmas morning as your children are waking up at 4 am and running down the stairs to see the magic Santa left for them overnight. I like how this early Word LP shows us how they identified the Stereo versions from the more common Mono versions at the time. Other labels did a top-to-bottom shift, but Word just did one cover for both with a small overprint in the upper right corner. But in this case, the Word logo was barely visible aagainst the dark photograph, so they added a small white sticker up there so that you knew it was a Word record. Believe it or not, I looked at this LP this morning and thought about resharing it, but then I decided on Chimeatron instead (because Chimeatron command you!).  But then I got a request, and I figured I better go ahead and get it up here.  At least there's one person out there who wants some Christmas carillon. Carillon!

I don't think I've brought you near enough Christmas music performed on a carillon this year, and as the web's leading purveyor of such music, that just can't abide.  So here's a good one that's sure to be a favorite, if for nothing more than the great cover.  Dollars to donuts, you're going to see that cover used on somebody's mix CD next year.  Wait and see!  And if you use it, you'd better send me a copy!  And it's on a great label for Christmas music, too.  Westminster put out some great stuff in the early years of the LP, most of which has not seen the digital light of day.  I'm doing my best to change that, but these things take time.  I can think of at least two Christmas LPs on the label that I've only seen on the back of other sleeves, or sampled on label comps.  So I've got my work cut out for me yet.  (Now that I think of it, I've got an empty sleeve for one of them, and a record for the other with no sleeve.  And no, they didn't come together like that!).  Anyhow, this is Robert Locksmith & Robert Owen-Carillon For Christmas (Westminster WP 6020, Mono, 1956).  What fun those recording sessions must have been.  Robert, do this, Robert, you're a little flat, no, not you Robert...

A Couple Kleins

A third (and fourth) reshare this evening, something that a certain someone from Chili keeps bugging me about, so here you go.  John Klein was a prolific and notable carillon artist in the late fifties and early sixties, releasing probably dozens of albums in his lifetime.  I've shared more than a few of the Christmas ones here, but many have lapsed into unavailability.  At least one of them is available on iTunes, so he's not entirely escaped the modern digital download world.  The two LPs here appear to be the same music, just released at different times and with different covers, and I didn't notice until after I'd ripped and shared them out.  So in the interest of completeness, here they both are.  The first one was originally shared here, and is John Klein-Noel Bells (Stone Mountain SM-201, Stereo).

Remastered Klein

I'm on a roll tonight!  I haven't gotten six posts up in a single day in weeks.  See what you can do when you're healthy, only work half a day, and get tomorrow off?  Perhaps next year I'll just take the whole month off work to post sharity, I think they'll understand.  Anyhow, this is a slight remastering of a non-Christmas album that has proven to be very Christmassy.  I first shared a few tracks from this during Christmas in July 2009, and I liked them so much, felt they were so in the spirit of the season if not the letter, that I decided to share the whole thing, which I also did in 2009.  In fact, it was one of my very few new shares in 2009 after my hard drive went south for the winter and never came back.  A month or so ago I found my original WAV files still on the new HD, and I ran them through ClickRepair to make them sound all that much better.  So that's the remastered version you're downloading tonight.  Unlike many of the other carillon albums I share on here, this one features studio accompaniment from an orchestra and chorus, and I think that makes a huge difference in the general listenability of the carillon.  Why don't you give this one a download and let me know if it's everything I'm making it out to be?  This is John Klein With Orchestra And Chorus Arranged And Conducted By Leo Addeo-Bells In Toyland-John Klein At The Sun Life Centenary Carillon (RCA Victor LSP-3832, Stereo, 1967).

Slowing Down

You may have noticed that I sharply curtailed my sharity today. It's a combination of a couple of things. I started feeling under the weather yesterday (and today hasn't been one iota better) and it's getting pretty close to Christmas. I don't think the folks on my nice list are going to be too impressed when I give them a CD of some Christmas music I ripped. So I need to find some time to do a little Christmas shopping. But I really can't do that until I feel better. So curling up on the couch under a blanket is going to take precedence over sitting in front of the glowing monitor for a bit. Time once again to share out a whole collection of one artist's Christmas output.This time it's carilloner John Klein. Mr. Klein released plenty of carillon LPs over the years, and a fair number of them are Christmas. To my knowledge, only one of them has been released on CD, and one is now available for downloaded legally, but I'll get to those later. Right now I'm going to reshare what is probably my favorite Christmas LP of his, one that was recorded in conjunction with the Coca-Cola Company and the 1964 World's Fair. You'll have to download the share and read the enclosed booklet to learn all the particulars, and you'll have some great carillon with orchestra music to listen to while you read. A Carillon For The Birds

If you read my last post, you'll know what I'm about to throw up here. This is an LP that attracted me primarily for it's cover, but it turned out that the music was at least slightly interesting, but mostly for what snuck into the recording that shouldn't be there. You've seen all sorts of Christmas on a carillon records here at the blog in past years, but I think this is the first one this year. What you probably haven't heard on any of my other carillon records is the birds that normally live in the bell tower. But on this record, they are included. I was somewhat shocked to hear them when I was recording the record. They're just chirping away in the background, clear as day, seemingly unperturbed by the huge bells pealing away a few feet from where they must have been perched. I wondered if they had been noticed back in 1955 when this was recorded, and sure enough, a close reading of the liner notes mentions them. How hi the fi, indeed! This may or may not be some more John Klein at the carillon. I got this record all recorded up, then realized it had the same track list as the record I brought you last night from Mr. Klein. But it's in a different order, and on a different record label. Times on the tracks are pretty close to the same, though. So you be the judge.
