Harping On Christmas 5

Time passes, and I have another harp record for you. Did you ever imagine there were so many out there? I certainly didn't know it until I started pulling a few together this season while recording some shares. They just kept turning up from nooks and crannies of the collection. This next one might be the oldest I have here and I think I noticed arrangements from this one copied on some of the others. And this is on a major label, too!  Please download and enjoy Carlos Salzedo, Harp-Christmas Carols In Hi-Fi (Mercury MG50116, Mono, 1956). I automatically love records with Hi-Fi in the title!

1. Concert Variations On Adeste Fideles (Oh Come, All Ye Faithful)
2. Silent Night
3. Jingle Bells
4. We Three Kings Of Orient Are
5. Concert Variations On Deck The Halls With Boughs Of Holly
6. It Came Upon The Midnight Clear
7. Angels We Have Heard On High
8. I Wonder As I Wander
9. Concert Variations On O Tannenbaum
10. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
11. Away In A Manger
12. The First Noël
13. O Little Town Of Bethlehem
14. Away In A Manger (To The Tune Of "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton")
15. Concert Variations On Good King Wenceslas
16. What Child Is This (To The Tune Of Greensleeves)
17. God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
18. Fantasy On A Noël Provencal
19. Fantasy On A Neapolitan Carol
20. Fantasy On A Catalan Carol
21. Fantasy On A Basque Carol

  1. Ernie,Been trying to comment, but something's been giving me error messages. Been downloading these things for a few years (can't remember when I started), but enjoying them a little too much, kinda like Lee Harsfeld's buildups LOL. Heard the Away In A Manger variation elsewhere, but didn't associate the tune with Afton. Of course, only place I've ever heard that song sung, is The Andy Griffith Show LOL. Also, thought What Child Is This and Greensleeves were the same tune. Merry Christmas, praying for y'all

    1. Thanks for dropping in. There's something about Google needing to use third party cookies that is screwing up people's ability to comment. I need to make a post about it. Was fighting it for a while myself, and it's my blog!

    2. It's so strange. For the most part today, I've had no problems. Then I'll try to comment and have to change browsers or use a VPN. It's random.

    3. Buster, how old is your computer? Mine is past the decade mark, so a new one is in the cards for this coming year. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I'm grasping at straws...

  2. Oh and that's what I get, for not proofreading my stuff, but it worky now LOL.

    1. LOL, Ernie. I can comment in Firefox, but tried in Chrome and that's where I was getting the error message, go figure!

    2. Yeah, Firefox is my browser of choice. It seems to be working well now, though I sometimes have to click over to another tab and back to get the comment field to respond to my clicks. Weird... I think Google has pretty much given up on Blogger at this point. :(

    3. Ernie,
      Doesn't Google own Blogger?

    4. Yep, but they don't seem to be actively supporting it at the moment. I'm just hoping they don't kill it off in the future like they have so many of their other less popular products.

    5. Roger on that. I became familiar with their practices in that department, when they got rid of Google Reader. Been using The Old Reader, Ever since.

  3. I went down a Brazilian Christmas music rabbit hole a few years ago and I recall a lot of harp albums. Luis Bordón for one - I think you might have shared a track here once. But there’s lots more!

    1. Yes, got a couple of those around here somewhere, but I have to leave something for next year. :)

  4. Every record from the mid-50s was "in Hi-Fi," even the ones that weren't in hi-fi, if you know what I mean. In practical terms, it usually denoted that they turned the bass and treble knobs to the right.

I think I posted a Christmas harp album myself a few years ago. I had no idea there were so many, although I've seen that Bianco record every once in a while.

    1. Insert long story about postwar improvements to recording and mixing and what-not. Full Frequency Range, a lesson that was lost of CDs, I reckon. And there are a whole lot of Christmas harp records out there for those who choose to seek them. :)

    2. Oh heck, Decca/London's technique for FFRR was just to turn up the gain about 2kHz or so. Mercury's "Living Presence" involved sticking the mike close to the orchestra so that the fundamentals were over-emphasized. Both of them just sound wiry to me. But you are right, there were improvements in equipment.

    3. Well, they weren't all "Improvements", they just wanted better sound on the popular equipment. Like Dynagroove. :)

  5. Hi Ernie,
    1. This album, in my mind, beats the Adele album. Great to do your Christmas food shopping by.
    2. Personally, I use Microsoft Edge. I do so because I am in the Microsoft Insider Program. I have Chrome, but do not use it on my PC.
    3. I have also Brave. Brave is great if you view YouTube.

Your Christmas card was posted today from Berlin. Forgive my handwriting. I chose the card just for you. You will notice why when you receive it, hehe...

    1. Well, this is much different music than what Adele was shooting for. :) Thanks for sending a card!
