Arc Reactor 4
This may be the most exciting new share from the Arc label I have for you today. Who doesn't love a little Tijuana Brass sound mixed in with their Christmas music? Everyone does! Or doesn't! Wait, what was the question? OK, let me start over. This next record from the Arc label is a fun one as it features the peppy sound of Tijuana from South of the Border, or at least what everyone thought the sounds from down there would be after Herb Alpert hit the big time with his trumpet. I'm afraid I can't swear that the music here hasn't been released elsewhere under a different name as so frequently happens with these Tijuanabees and their Christmas music. It's a fun listen though, so until we find out it's a rehash of something else, please download and enjoy Bobby Duvalle-Tijuana Christmas Party (Arc (Canada) SAC18, Stereo). Note that Arc also had at least one other entry in the Tijuanabee sweepstakes. I first shared that other one in 2011 with you (but you have to go to 2018 for a working download).
1. Jingle Bell Rock
2. Tijuana Bells
3. White Christmas
4. Winter Wonderland
5. Frosty, The Snowman
6. The Happy Snowflake
7. The Christmas Song
8. Let It Snow
9. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
10. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

The cover appears to have been done by the same tasteful artist who did the lime-green graffiti wall.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this one is _that_ bad... :)
DeleteHi Ernie, thank you for sharing this. I have made a playlist of these two albums together. I believe, but I could be wrong, that in the past you shared these out: A George Garabedian Production – Phillips 66 Presents Tijuana Christmas Vol.1 and 2. I will have to locate them in my external hard drive Christmas files. Then add them to my playlist.
ReplyDeleteYep, I shared 'em a while back. First volume is here:

Second volume is here:

Hi Ernie, yes, I found it in a file labeled 2019. That was the year I was finally diagnosed with ADHD. So, I just left everything in one yearly file, as I could not cope to organize things into separate file folders.
DeleteThanks for these links. I will go ahead and re-download them. Just in case they are different?
Nope, not any different.
DeleteBeing a fan of all things Tijuana Brass (and the wonderfully named Tijuanabees) I have a playlist of all the Tijuana holiday albums I've encountered online over the years. I already had this one, but somehow I missed the prior offering from 2011/2018....which brings the total count on said playlist to twelve. That's a lotta perky brass.
ReplyDeleteBut are they all different? Every time I think I've discovered a new one, I find out it's just a repackaging on one I've already got. :( There's another one on Arc that I've shared before, but it turned out to be the same as another one I'd shared...

I put a lot of thought into making a comp from all these albums and calling it Christmas Tijuanabees, but I got frustrated because so many tracks in my pile were the same music ascribed to different artists. I'll do it someday...
DeleteIt's funny you should ask, as I would just add the albums to the playlist and then listen on shuffle rather than explore each one. It turns out the two you linked to (releases from Canada and the US), as well as a third credited to "The Torero Brass" (a studio session group led by Alan Moorhouse, from the UK) are all the exact same LP.
DeleteThere's also another pair of albums (both incidentally featuring covers of non-Mexicans wearing fake mustaches) where it's the same basic instrumental tracks but one adds hip 60s vocals on top:

https://www.discogs.com/master/1823706-Tijuana-Voices-Sing-Merry-Christmas-With-Brass
So that's still at least 9.5 different albums of material...
I think there's more of that overdubbing funny business going on with this one, though only marginal Tijuana content.

So the "Navidades Blancas" album uses a track from the Tijuana Voices...which is an already overdubbed version of the Border Brass. It's taking a moment for my brain to go down that repurpose wormhole!
DeleteIf you're able to possibly add the "Navidades" album to your list of future remasters I'd love to hear it. Btw, how crazy is it that I just ripped my copy of the Sy Mann album today of all days?! Man, my life is often full of odd little coincidences...
Well, I may have that wrong, they probably went all the way back to the undubbed Border Brass. It's been a long time ago now. There's still a good download of it at this post, a re-encode I think from 2018. Enjoy!

Thanks, Ernie! Excited to give it a listen.
Delete"Tijuanabees" is such a great word!
ReplyDeleteAnother thing I was pretty proud of this season. :)
DeleteThanks for this. For seome reason I alwys seem to enjoy the Tijuanabees albums more than the official TJB Christmas album.
ReplyDeleteI think they're a lot of fun, but you have go give Herb the credit for popularizing the idea.
DeleteBack in 2013, I did my best to untangle the snarl of Tijuana-style xmas albums – I suspect the article is due for an update. https://www.depthoffieldmagazine.com/2013/12/14/christmas-music-guidebook-part-one-a-totally-tijuana-christmas/
ReplyDeleteGood overview, and thanks for the shout out at the end! Would love to see an update!
