Around The Clock Saturday-Part 15

OK, here's a record that isn't strictly Christmas, but it has snowflakes in the title, and it's by Julie London, so who cares! You'd probably listen to Julie sing the "P" listings in the phone book and enjoy it, I know I would. Who knew that the head nurse on Emergency had such a career before TV? I certainly didn't. This is Julie London-Arranged & Conducted By Ernie Freeman-When Snowflakes Fall In The Summer (Liberty 7" 45 RPM 55605, Mono, 1963).

  1. One of my all-time favorite Julie London records! As you know, it is the flip side of "I'm Coming Back To You", which was a pretty substantial success in the Chicagoland area. Julie's double-tracked vocals, combined with Ernie Freeman's great arrangement, more in the style of the charts he was doing with Bobby Vee and not as driving as the ones he would later do with Rat Packers Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, help to create an elegant musical setting for Julie's unique singing vocals. I know she did cut at least one Christmas tune that shows up on some Yuletide CD and tape collections, "I'd Like You For Christmas", which Jim Nabors covered on his 1972 Merry Christmas album, again with Snuff Garrett as the producer. This appeared in Stereo, as did the A-side on her "Wonderful World of Julie London" album, which made its way on to CD in 2007 on-a-2-LP-on-one-CD set from EMI in England. Thanks for giving this neglected Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil-penned classic some much deserved attention!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! Don't have a hard copy (yet) of her Christmas single, but it's available all over the place these days, so I was happy to have something a little more obscure.

  2. Hi Ernie,
As someone who will be 46 very soon, I am a big Julie London fan. I lost my father when I was 13 and my mother when I was 15. I just remember my father did not like Julie London. As my surviving family threw me away when I came out at just over 18, I rebelled to find out who I was. During this process I found Julie London and have collected all her albums either on CD or mp3. It is a shame I never knew why my father did not like her, other than his friend across the street was a huge Julie London fan. Glad you featured her here on your blog. Hopefully, others will come to enjoy her music.
