Around The Clock Saturday-Part 12

If you love Christmas music like I do, then you're probably well aware of the folks at Real Gone Music. They reissue a lot of music every year, and Christmas time is no exception. Year in and year out they find some classic Christmas music and do it up right with a legit release on CD or vinyl, often featuring bonus tracks, going back to the original master tapes and creating the best sound possible. One of their featured releases for the season this year was an expanded reissue of Steve & Eydie's 1964 Christmas record, That Holiday Feeling. It's a good one to begin with, but they've added unreleased tracks, songs from singles, album tracks, whatever they could find. But whether it was something they couldn't license, or (though I doubt it) something they didn't know about, they missed a track. And I've got it here for you. On the LP it's sung by Steve Lawrence, who co-wrote it with Berl Rotfeld, but on this singe from 1961, it's sung by Eydie. So once you've bought the reissue, download and enjoy Eydie Gorme-Arranged And Produced By Don Costa-Let Me Be The First To Wish You Merry Christmas (United Artists 7" 45 RPM UA 283, Mono, 1961).

  1. So Eydie did this first! I was surprised that David and Faye Lawrence missed this version when they were going through his parents master tapes. Very different from Steve's version, which became a favorite of mine when I first heard it as a kid on Goodyear's Great Songs of Christmas Album Seven. Slightly different version. Excellent Don Costa arrangement and great vocals from Eydie. Going to this blog has become a gourmet feast of Christmas rarities! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Could be that UA didn't allow them to keep their masters. Or maybe UA wouldn't license the tracks. All sorts of things come into play on these reissues.

    2. They did get their United Artists masters. Their GL Music imprint put out such classic LP's as their Cozy and Two on the Aisle duet collections and Steve's classic Portrait of My Love album. You can check their twofer discography at steveandeydie.com.

    3. They did? Hmmm, I guess this song just slipped though the cracks somehow...

  2. I am still waiting for my copy of the new That Holiday Feeling! CD. Even though they missed this cut, I am glad that they included Steve's version of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" on Albums Seven and Ten of The Great Songs of Christmas.
