Gospel Week-Part 5
Finishing up my collection of Merrill Womach albums is this rare LP that was something he made for subscribing funeral homes. He provided a sort of MUZAK service to such places that served up appropriate background music for the services taking place. This record holds some Christmas music, some straight gospel, and a few sermons about Christmas & New Year's. It's something I doubt you've ever seen before, and it's overprinted with some info about a local Sarasota funeral home. Not sure who the target market here is since I think it's unlikely that you got a free record with every third burial, but maybe. This is Merrill Womach-Season's Greetings (National Music Service for Hawkins Funeral Home, Sarasota, Florida No Number, Stereo, 1973). Note that there are no track titles on the sleeve or labels, I had to figure all that out, so things are a bit arbitrary. Also, you may not be able to tell from my scans, but this came in a large envelope instead of a standard LP jacket.
1. O Come All Ye Faithful
2. Christmas Sermon 1
3. Away In A Manger
4. Christmas Sermon 2
5. Silent Night
6. One Pair Of Hands
7. New Year's Sermon 1
8. One Solitary Life; There's Something About That Name
9. New Year's Sermon 2
10. The King Is Coming
Christmas greetings from a funeral parlor.....*brrrr*, pretty damn creepy. I know I have no say in this sort of thing, but please dear God, I don't want to die during the holidays because of how it would affect my loved ones.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that could put a damper on things, but it happens. :(
DeleteNow that I look at the cover, the guy in the forefront looks like a frikken cadaver, skin all pulled tight and embalmed.. Man Ernie, thanks?
ReplyDeleteThat's your host, Merrill Womach. He survived a fiery plane crash early in his career, but kept going. Pretty inspiring, but creepy.
DeleteLooking forward to hearing this piece of work actually!
ReplyDeleteHe's not a bad singer, actually. But it's hard to get past the presentation, I guess.
