This record had been on my want list for a while, but when I went through the giant archive of 7" records I have accumulated over the years, I found both a promo and a stock copy. Isn't there some sort of Christmas challenge about going the whole season without hearing The Little Drummer Boy? I know there's one about Last Christmas called Whamageddeon, but I don't know what the Drummer Boy one is called. Well, I'm afraid you're about to lose that challenge. This is The Bermuda Schwartz-The Little Drummer Boy (Taylor Time 7" 45 RPM TBZ 001/002 "Side Bible", Stereo). This might be a local Florida record, I see something about a recording studio here in the state there on the label. That's all I know about it, though I think it came from a thrift store and not a record store proper.

Around The Clock Saturday-Part 2

Another late-night post for you here, this time from the controversial Amos and Andy. Or is it? Looking at the label of the 45 above, it's got their name on it, but if you look at a copy of the 78 (shared at The Internet Archive), it's credited to The Jeff Alexander Choir. Their name is in smaller letters on the 45 for some reason, and neither Amos nor Andy appear to be present in the song that I can hear. Who knows what's going on here, unless they thought they needed a bigger name on the record. Anyhow, it's good music and I think you'll enjoy it. This is Little Bitty Baby (Columbia 7" 45 RPM 4-42623 Not For Sale Radio Station Copy, Mono, 1960).

I may be mistaken, but I think this is the very last entry in our production record series. Let me take a look in the vault and see if I see any more. No, I think this is it. A Silent Instrumental

One of the themes of my group singles post this year was supposed to be singles with instrumental B sides. But it turned out I didn't have very many of them to share, and I think this is the only one I wound up with. And the B side is credited to a different artist than the A side, which is a little odd since it's just the music from the A side. But I think the vocalist was a member of the band, so they gave him all the credit on the A side and the band took the credit on the flipside. This is Frank Jennings-Silent Night b/w Syndicate-Silent Night (Instrumental) (Attic (Canada) 7" 45 RPM AT 175, Stereo, 1977).

Poems For Songs

Under the heading of things you probably don't want to hear, this is a small collection of song-poem Christmas records. I've probably shared out other song-poem stuff this season without realizing it, I'm certainly not an expert on the stuff. I'm only calling these song-poems because I recognize a couple of the songs from collections I've seen here and there. So someone may come along and correct me, but I think I've get them in the right category. For those who mercifully don't know about such things, song-poems are the records created by an unscrupulous record label who advertised for people to send in their poems to be set to music, which they then promised to promote to radio in hopes of creating the next hit record. Well, they didn't do any of that, they just recorded the songs really fast, pressed up a few copies and sent them to the sucker who paid a 'nominal' fee to cover costs. Don't say I didn't warn you if you give these a listen.

Sights, Sounds, No Scents

I'm guessing that this was a freebie that came with a Christmas candle, or some other product that was designed to make your house smell like a pine forest. Because it promises to give you sights of Christmas, which I assume is the LP sleeve art, the sounds of Christmas, which I assume are the nameless singers and the Christmas story in the grooves, but there's no sign left of any scents. I stuck my nose in the jacket and inhaled deeply, but all I got was an asthma attack from all the dust in there. No scent at all. But you'll be able to enjoy the sights & sounds if you give a download to John Rydgren (and some unknown musical artists)-The Sights, The Sounds, The Scents, Of Christmas (Melody Masters for Sun Glo 7-7777, Stereo). I'm guessing Sun-Glo is the key to unraveling this mystery. Was that a smelly product? Anybody know?

Getting late, better wrap this post up and call it a night. Weird little record here from, I think, the UK, though there's nothing much on the label to confirm that. And what I at first thought was some scribbles on the label are in fact the label logo. I almost photoshopped that out until I realized it were the same on both sides. Turns out that that is a kiddie record, and one done without too much ambition. I really though that B side could be something great, but, well, you'll see. This is The Small Chimes-Eyes Of Christmas b/w S.A.N.T.A. (Cavendish 7" 45 RPM CAV001, Stereo, 1981).

Christmas On The Radio-Part 14

Yep, it's another entry in the radio production music series. And it's from a new series we haven't seen before, one that I don't think is owned by Tanner, so that's a little different. This one is Mars Production Library-Christmas Images And Beds (Mars Broadcasting H-913, Stereo). It's a nice selection of classic Christmas music and some new stuff custom written for this LP. I think you'll like it. I can't tell you how much I wanted to Photoshop out that hand-writtten number in the moon at upper right, but luckily I realized that it's the catalog number and was probably written in when they distributed the record. Many of these type records used a generic sleeve to hold the vinyl, though some of them did have a custom-printed back panel or a sticker. They spent the money of the music, not the visual presentation. The only people who ever saw these were faceless DJs and behind-the-scenes radio engineers.

Santa Buys The Farm

If you were around in the 80's, you may remember the dire straits that the American farm industry was in. High inflation, poor weather, and just about everything else that could be a problem reared it's ugly head and made it hard to make a living by creating food. I was young at the time, but I remember seeing stories of farm auctions on TV and wondering where exactly our food was going to come from. Times are a little better now, but farming is still not as easy life. Anyhow, it's against that backdrop of the mid-eighties that this next single was released. Have a listen to John Kirby with Give Us Our Farm Back For Christmas b/w You Don't Need A Fire To Be Warm At Christmas (BNA 7" 45 RPM BNA 017, Stereo, 1985).

Mono & Stereo

The theme here is a handful of singles that feature the same song on both sides, only one side is in mono and the other side is in stereo. I guess that was a popular format for singles sent to radio stations for a while as not all stations could handle the newfangled stereo records. I'm not up on the technical aspects of why they couldn't just fold the stereo single down to a single channel in-house at the station, but I'm sure there was a good reason. Anyhow, I recorded both sides of all these records, but I understand if you throw away all the mono versions. I don't think any of them are unique from the flip sides.

Glory Hallelujah

As a frequent crate digger, I see a lot of records. Enough records that I tend to be able to pick up patterns. And one of those patterns is a popular label. One such label is called Musical Heritage Society. You can pick out their records easily because they all tend to be formatted the same with black & white covers, lots of open space, maybe a woodcut image on the front, and generally some classical content that is of little interest to me. I have a fairly large collection of them anyway, all Christmas of course, because I tend to buy most of the cheap Christmas albums I see if I don't think I have them already. But when I found this record, I didn't realize until later that it was part of this label's releases. (And as frequently happens with these things, after I recorded it for sharing, I found another copy in the archives...) I also didn't recognize the artist as being anyone I might know, but it turns out he was involved in a much later Christmas record you may have seen around, Turned On Christmas. Anyhow, this is an interesting record on many levels, so give it a listen and I think you'll enjoy it. This is Paul Freeman Conducting The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra And London Ambrosian Chorus-The Glory Of Christmas (Musical Heritage Society MHS 3652, Stereo, 1970).

Who's Jeannie?

For years and years, I've been seeing this LP in the thrift stores and wondering who it was and what the story behind the record was. I can remember seeing this in the bins at the Salvation Army thrift store in Gainesville when I went to college. I think at the time I assumed it was a gospel record, but I didn't have much reason to assume that, I just did. I'm afraid I don't have much of an answer for you tonight as to who it is, but I do have two different covers. Sometime recently I found both of them together at a store and suddenly wondered if I'd been seeing both covers all along, but never together, so I didn't realize there was a difference. They're clearly from the same photo shoot, but not the same shot. The back of the LP is different also, but most of the credits are the same. Even the labels are slightly different. It seems to be more than just a later pressing, as if maybe there was a disagreement over production or something. As near as I can tell, the music is the same from one to the other, though to be honest, I didn't record both of them, I just kinda spot-checked here and there. Maybe one of our visitors can shed some light on this strange situation. For what it's worth, Jeannie released other albums with a similar "Jeannie Sings' theme, one recorded right here in Florida (On Captiva Island, which was hit badly by Hurricane Ian just this year). They all claim to be from TV specials, but how was she able to make TV specials as an unknown performer? Is she like Dora Hall and was married to a rich guy who bankrolled her career? This is Jeannie Conroy-Jeannie Sings Christmas At Waterville Valley, New Hampshire (Schooner Sc. 85013, Stereo, 1977).
