Kinda Like Glee

This 10" record is a nice set of carols, many of which aren't that well known, being sung by a college choir from somewhere in the Midwest. I don't think there's anything here that will jump out at you, but it's well done and worth a listen. Sorry if I'm not selling it well, but it's been a rough day and I'm struggling to get some stuff up for you. It does have a great cover though, don't you think?  This is The Concordia Choir-Paul J. Christiansen, Director-Around The Christmas Tree (Allied 10" 33 RPM ARS-LP 2004 Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., Mono). No idea about the date for this one, hard to tell. I just noticed the copy up on Discogs has a single color cover, while mine has two. Maybe mine is an earlier pressing, I don't know.

1. Silent Night
2. How Far Is It To Bethlehem
3. The Three Kings
4. Jesus Was Born On This Day
5. Away In A Manger
6. A Flemish Carol
7. Thy Little Ones Dear Lord Are We
8. The Cradle
9. Jeg Er Saa Glad
10. Be Not Afraid

  1. There are several Concordias, but this one is probably the Moorhead, Minnesota institution that has a strong musical tradition.

  2. Yeah, that's the one. I seem to have shared out something from them during a Christmas in July at some point, too, but I'm too lazy to look it up. :)

  3. Ernie, thank you for this. I'm really enjoying it. One of my all-time favorites is the original 1946 Christmas Hymns and Carols by the Robert Shaw Chorale, and you can hear echoes of that here.

I couldn't find any date either, but we do know it was 1950 or later, because the back cover quotes a 2/20/50 New York Times review of the choir’s performance at Carnegie Hall.

Also, according to Discogs, this appears to be their first of many, many recordings, and the only one for the Allied label.

Otherwise, this is another one of those great Christmas LP mysteries.

  4. Another in the long list of "The Cover Is WAY Cooler Than The Music" releases...

  5. The cover looks like it could have fit in with your album cover "Doodles" collection from so many years ago.

  6. Finding a nice cover is half the battle. Finding good music inside is just icing on the cake.
