Mann With A Horn

Here's one that no one asked me to reshare, but I'm doing it anyway.  This is a personal favorite from back in 2006.  Both the covers you see here housed the same music, but I think they came out in different years.  Both were used as promotional items for an insurance company.  I used to be partial to the cover above, but I now prefer the one below since I got a note from one of the two little kids on there saying thanks for sharing the music from their father.  That's the sort of thing that makes this work worthwhile. Christmas With Mozelle

 Are you tired of Bob Kames?  Good, so am I.  Unfortunately, this share also featured an organ, but it's a much more stately affair, accompanying some singers in an English country church.  In fact, there is no artist credited, just church choir and organ.  But that's not why I'm sharing this early RCA LP.  I'm sharing it for the great Mozelle Thompson cover.  I don't know much about this Thompson person (the internet seems to be limited to Thompson, Mozelle (1927-1970), African American artist from Pittsburgh), but I've been finding his covers here and there and really enjoying the style.  You can find a few examples on the blog here, here and here, and I've got more I hope to scan and post after the holidays are over.  (I thought I'd shared more of the album covers, and not just the doodles, but I can't find them if I did.  I'm such a slacker...)  If you know more about this fellow, I'd really appreciate any info you can send my way.  I remember how excited I was when I found this LP, even though the front and back covers had come apart, and I think the record was in a different stack.  But I put it all together and got a decent rip from it.  Later on I found a UK issue of the same music, dated a year later, so I suppose it came out in the US first, oddly enough.  That cover is down at the bottom of the page, it's not nearly as good as the one above.  Anyhow, here's a brand new share for you, An English Country Church Choir With Organ-Christmas In England-Carol Service In A Country Church (RCA Victor LPM-1568, 1957, Mono).

Kames On King 5

So what is left of Bob Kames that I can possibly still have to share.  Not much it turns out.  But this one LP, first shared in 2009 is half Bob Kames, half King Karoleers.  I think the Bob Kames stuff is pulled from the LPs I've already shared with you, but the King Karoleers material is from a much older 10" LP that I've never seen before.  So I figure it's worth having.  It's also worth noting that I was able to run these tracks through ClickRepair recently, so they should sound better than ever.  That's good enough reason for you to download The King Karoleers And Bob Kames-16 Traditional Christmas Carols (Gusto/Starday SD-3025, Mono, 1978).

The New Old Hugo

For many years I've shared Hugo Winterhalter's great Christmas album, Christmas Magic, with you,but not this one.  This is the 10" version, and it predates the 12" record I've been sharing with you all this time.  I think when they decided to put the old music out as a 12", they stole some star-titled tracks from another 10" and called it good.  Which is a shame, because Hugo had quite a few single-only Christmas tracks that would have made great additions to this record (Hint-Search the blog!).  But for now, you're gonna get the original 10" with it's original line-up.  This is Hugo Winterhalter And His Orchestra And Chorus-Christmas Magic (RCA Victor 10" LPM 3132, Mono, 1953).

Mummer, Not Murmer

I'm not sure if this goes with today's theme of polka music or not, but it popped into my head when I was looking for something new to share.  In my record hunts, I frequently see these string band records, often talking about mummers or mummer parades, and I'm really not sure what it's all about.  To my untrained eye, it looks a little like a parade I saw once in San Francisco, but the less said about that, the better.  No offense to these guys who dress up in feathers and march in parades, but, umm, well, whatever.  But this is the first of those records I've seen that featured holiday music, so I wanted to share it with you.  I think you'll enjoy Happy Holiday With The Best Of The Mummers (Sure SM-Vol. 13, Mono).

Old Andy

Today's Single Of The Day (tm) is Andy Williams first record on the Cadence label.  I'd never heard of anyone start with a Christmas record, but that's what happened here.  Turns out, it didn't go anywhere, and it took Andy a couple of more tries to become the big star he was destined to be.  One side of this single has turned up here and there on CD, but the other side, The Wind, The Sand And The Star has eluded the magic discs for all these years.  I think you'll find it's a great little song that you've most likely never heard before.  Please be my guest and download Andy Williams, Orchestra Conducted By Archie Bleyer-Christmas Is A Feeling In Your Heart b/w The Wind, The Sand And The Star (Cadence 7" 45 RPM 1282, 1955, Mono).

Just For Kicks

I decided to take all of my old shares and get them in one place.  Then I loaded the whole thing into iTunes.  It tells me that I have 5669 songs, and it should play for 10 days.  That's a little exaggerated because there are duplicates in there from replacing mono version with stereo, or from some of these remasters I've done this year, and some stuff that never actually got shared because it turned out to be on CD.  That also includes all of the Christmas in July tracks, which really add up over the years.  I'm a little proud of that total, all from vinyl, all from my own collection.  :)  Hopefully, you've downloaded your fair share of those tracks and have a nice little collection, too.  OK, that's enough patting myself on the back for now.  Thanks for indulging me.

Glee!!

Maybe with the popularity of that Glee show, this is a share whose time has come.  It's time first came two years ago when I shared it even though it skipped in a few tracks (so bad in one song I left it out of the share).  But I fixed all that last year after I found a cleaner copy.  Now this year I ran it through ClickRepair, and it sounds better than ever.  Still not as good as a Journey cover, I guess, but good none-the-less.  I just wish I could find it in Stereo.  This is Dartmouth Glee Club-Paul R. Down At The Barbershop

Any Repost Requests?

There's a long time between now and Christmas that I need to fill up with posts, so if there's anything you've seen posted here before that you'd like to see pop up again, let me know.  Obviously, I can't share out the stuff that's now on CD or legit download, but that still leaves hundreds of things I've shared out over the years that are still fair game.  I've got folders full of old shares around here, so finding old stuff shouldn't be a problem.  You guys probably remember stuff that I've forgotten all about (like that last David Rose post...)  If you don't request anything, then I have to choose what gets reposted, and I get tired of having to pick something each and every time.  Anyone, anyone?

Still No Stripper

To be perfectly honest, I forgot that I had shared this one out.  I took a look just to see what I was missing, and there is was.  Some things I remember like it was yesterday, and some things I have no memory of ever posting.  I first threw this up one night back in 2007 and haven't revisited it since. Wintertime?

The title says wintertime, but I'm pretty sure it's almost 80 degrees outside.  Well, I suppose I live in Florida for a reason, now don't I?  Maybe in a few weeks, things will start to cool off a bit.  Anyhow, maybe sharing this record out will cool things off, too.  This first came to the blog in 2008 on the strength of it's song titles alone.  Have a look below if you don't think they're great.  The organ isn't too impressive, but I'll give it a passing grade. Pete Plays

Always a fine compliment to Big Tiny Little, this LP by Pete Fountain is making a return visit to the blog this year.  I first shared this with you back in that golden year of 2005 from a mono copy, which I upgraded in 2007 to stereo, and that's what you're hearing tonight.  I can't say too much more about this record than what I've said before.  I can tell you that Pete Fountain is quite the survivor.  He's still doing his thing after all these years, even after his home was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina.  Here is Pete Fountain-Candy Clarinet (Coral CRL 757487, Stereo, 1966).

Wrap It Up! Week One

Well, that's the end of the first four days of Christmas 2010.  Are you having a good time yet?  I know I'm glad to be able to finally share some of this stuff I've been working on.  It's hard to keep track of so many things as they start to really pile up, and I don't want to jump the gun before Thanksgiving, either.  So when the season starts, I really have a lot of momentum built up.  That's why you've been seeing eight or more shares a day for the first few days.  That's going to slow down quite a bit tomorrow as I have to go back to work, but never fear, there's still plenty of good stuff in Santa's sack for the rest of the season.  I don't always get to do it, but I like to take a few minutes at the end of each week during the season and recap all the good stuff I've shared.  That gives me a chance to reflect on just how much I've gotten out there (sometimes it seems like I'm not busy enough if I don't spend every waking minute at the computer) and it lets you check to see if you missed something in all the holiday rush.  So let's take a look at all the stuff that's come out since last Thursday, Turkey Day.

New Big & Tiny

Snowmen, Not Pixies

I was reminded of this old share when I threw up a single by Santa's Pixie Helpers a minute ago.  I thought that the two groups might be one in the same, but that single isn't on here as far as I can tell. That Gospel Sound

Cha Cha Cha?

Your single of the day for today is this cute little number from the fine budget-label folks at Precision Radiation Instruments.  Unlike their normal push-it-out-the-door cover recordings, this little ditty features a bit of thought and some actual songwriting.  Side one is a cute song about what all the animals want for Christmas that really, really gets into your head.  I sang this for days after I recorded it, sometimes with the actual words, and sometimes with animal rhymes I made up myself ( a whirly bird...for the myna bird...).  The B side is a chipmunk-voiced take on The Christmas Song with a bit of cha cha cha thrown in.  Not too bad.  I've seen these songs on full albums put out by the same cheap label, I may even have shared them under a different name, I need to check, but when I saw the single, I thought it was too cute to pass up.  This is Sing Along With Santa's Pixie Helpers-The Animals' Christmas Song b/w The Christmas Song Cha Cha Cha?
