Midnight Burl

One of my favorite shares of 2011, this is a rare Christmas album from the great Burl Ives.  In it, he sings what are believed to be the favorite Christmas songs of a number of presidents, from Washington all the way down to Trump.  No, just kidding, Trump doesn't have a favorite Christmas song.  This list extends down through Nixon, who was either the current president when this was released, or had just resigned.  Interesting concept, even if there is no real proof behind many of the claimed favorites.  I'm still looking for the special educational version of this LP that features narration about each song, but it's proving tough to locate.  At least there's a mention of it at Discogs now.  For a while, I wasn't sure it existed. Anyhow, this will have to do for now.  Please download and enjoy this re-encoded version of Burl Ives, Music Conducted By Tony Mottola-Christmas At The White House (Caedmon TC 9102, Stereo, 1972).

1. The Little Drummer Boy (Richard M. Nixon)
2. Joy To The World (John Adams)
3. Adeste Fideles (Thomas Jefferson)
4. It Came Upon A Midnight Clear (Zachary Taylor)
5. While Shepherds Watch'd Their Flocks By Night (George Washington)
6. Silent Night (Lyndon B. Johnson)
7. Christmas On The Sea (Theodore Roosevelt)
8. We Three Kings Of Orient Are (Abraham Lincoln)
9. O Little Town Of Bethlehem (Ulysses S. Grant)
10. Shout The Glad Tidings (Andrew Jackson)

12. Art Thou Weary, Art Thou Laden (Franklin D. Roosevelt)

  2. Well, at least there aren't any obvious anachronisms, like Grover Cleveland preferring "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer."

What do you suppose an educational version of this would entail? Hopefully, it would teach children not to listen to Burl Ives records.

  3. I suspect there's a little narration telling how each Christmas song was selected to represent each president, but I'm just guessing. It's the completist in me that wants to hear it!
