Laymen

Some more gospel singing for you, this time by a group of fellows calling themselves The Laymen Singers.  Don't know a thing about them, except they're somehow in the group of religious recordings that tie in with Ralph Carmichael.  I guess the group of people linked to Ralph is actually larger than the group that isn't, so I'm not really telling you much there.  But I thought this was some good singing, and I've been giving you a lot of religious records here at the end of the season, so it fits right in.  This is The Laymen Singers-Vocal And Orchestral Direction By Ralph Carmichael-O Come, All Ye Faithful (Chapel LP 5036, Mono, 1959).  Lots of good stuff came out, music-wise, in 1959.

1. Star Carol
2. What Child Is This?
3. O Come, All Ye Faithful
4. Behold That Star
5. Silent Night
6. Christmas Hymn
7. Joy To The World
8. God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
9. O Come, O Come, Immanuel
10. I Wonder As I Wander
11. Away In A Manger
12. O Holy Night

  1. i’m not much on contemporary black music styles such as rap and hip hop. but i can understand how they have a certain appeal to their audiences. what is much harder to understand is why white kids sing those styles (in public) or why anyone would listen to them. i mean, it’s a free country; and if you want to make a ridiculous spectacle of yourself, you’re free to do so. but the jaws of people black and white just drop and stay dropped when you do.

and then ernie comes along and posts w frank alpers and the laymen singers’ “behold that star”, a 1959 white version of a negro spiritual. suddenly it’s not so hard to understand the white kids of today. there is a long traditional of white singers making themselves ridiculous. but there was once a color line in the music business. and the powers-that-were decided that black music should be presented to white america through the likes of pat boone et al. while the line was crumbling by then, one might think of this as an example or perhaps as an extension of that phenomenon.

i’m not trying to spoil anybody’s epiphany here. i’m just rambling. the caganer at the crèche

  2. Not sure how many folks will get the caganer reference, but that's pretty funny. :)
