Christmas Doodles

I came home from the store today with the Mahalia Jackson Christmas LP shown above.  And it reminded me of the one shown below from Arthur Lynds Bigelow & Marjorie MacComb.  Both of them are on Columbia, and came out a year apart (1955 & 1956).  And they both have the cool little Christmas artwork at the top of the LP above an appropriate photo.  I'm wondering if this was a series that Columbia did for Christmas?  I know I've seen the Mahalia in another cover that has no doodle and a different picture, not sure which is the original, though.  Anybody aware of any Columbia Christmas issues from around this same time period that has something similar?  I need to go dig through the piles...

  1. Jo Stafford's "Ski Trails" has a little doodle of a sleigh ride up top as well. It would have come out on Columbia around the same time.

  3. Found my own copy of the Mahalia Jackson Christmas album today at Goodwill--My first Christmas album find of 2023--in amongst a sea of mostly old school regular Christian and Southern Gospel albums. They also had the cover for a 1959-60 George Beverley Shea Christmas LP on RCA Victor, yet it had the wrong vinyl inside the jacket. It doesn't look like you uploaded the Mahalia Christmas album here on the blog. Maybe for the 2023 Christmas season! Thank you for bringing that record to my attention. BTW, Ski Trails is probably

  4. BTW, Ski Trails is probably one of my favorite Jo Stafford Christmas albums of hers next to the Joyful Season. Great versions of "Sleigh Ride" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" on that album. Found a copy for $3.00 inside a Wayne King jacket at a used record store in the mid-'90's. Then, in 2003, I found another Ok copy with cover at a local thrift store. After I bought it, I put the better vinyl in that cover and purged the original, which was inside a Wayne King "Soft As Silk" album cover.

  5. That last comment was mine. I forgot to put my ID moniker before I posted. My apologies.

  6. There was a reissue of the Mahalia Jackson Christmas on CD a few years ago with a mostly-white cover, so it's not the sort of thing I can share here. And many years ago, I worked my way through the entire George Beverly Shea Christmas LP catalog, right before my hard drive crashed and I lost everything I had been working on. I've not been able to work up the energy to go through it again...
