Terrible Twos

Much like that last record, this next one was a gift from a reader. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was the same reader. But this time, I was able to improve on the share a little bit from my own collection instead of having to point you to another blog. My benefactor sent me a copy of Sounds Of A Thousand Strings-Sounds Of A Thousand Strings Play For Christmas (Crown 164, Stereo, 1959), which is nice and all, but I discovered it was an abridged edition of the original If you want this version, please be my guest and go for it. But if you want the longer version, drop down below real quick.

1. Silent Night
2. Come All Ye Faithful
3. Hark The Herald Angels Sing
4. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
5. Little Town Of Bethlehem
6. Deck The Halls
7. Joy To The World
8. First Noel
9. Good King Wenceslas
10. O Holy Night
11. We 3 Kings

Now I suspect most of you have skipped right down here to get the complete version of this LP that was a donation to the blog. It took me some time but I was eventually able to locate an earlier release of this LP with a full twelve tracks on it. Looks like White Christmas got booted off the album at some point, probably as soon as they realized they needed to pay Irving Berlin a little slice of royalties every time they sold a copy. Cheap labels like Crown were notorious for removing tracks and reshuffling them to make a little extra money by reselling you something you already had. And I'm sure they were loathe to pay royalties on a track when there were lots and lots of public domain songs out there that didn't need to be paid for. So anyhow, this version features all the same tracks as the album above, plus White Christmas. I hope it was worth having to read my long jibber-jabber first. This is Sounds Of A Thousand Strings-Sounds Of A Thousand Strings Play For Christmas (Crown Records CST 164 Transparent Red Vinyl, Stereo, 1959). I remember having to do an awful lot of work on both of these covers just to make them a little more presentable. They made these covers out of tissue paper so that they fell apart as soon as you got them home from the store, then they got taped up over and over again through the years. I did the best I could, but you get what you get.

  1. Yay! You get huge props that someone sent you a good colored vinyl version of this record to copy instead of a later pressing with the generic white label that could have some sand mixed in with the vinyl. For a time, the Bihari brothers got super hyper-cheap with their product. The red vinyl should ensure that this copy has good sound quality.

    1. I believe you sent me a handful of records last year, hopefully one or two of those show up here during the season as well. Only one I can think of is Lowell Lundstrom, but I know there are others. (I didn't do the Tiny Tony record since it wasn't all Christmas, but I'll probably get to it during Christmas In July.)

  3. I think Lee (MYPWHAE) figured out that this material began its life as the (1958?) LP on the short-lived Lester label called "Singing Strings Herald Christmas." Funny thing is that the artist credited on that LP is Fritz Munch conducting the Cologne Symphony Orchestra -- an actual conductor and an actual orchestra. Later (1964?) it was reincarnated as "White Christmas" by George Jenkins and the Christmas Strings (Custom CS 5), and I still have a great-sounding Cheerful Earful stereo rip of this LP from the good old days.

    1. Huh. I've got that Lester LP coming up later this season. We'll have to compare and contrast.
