10-1

It's the tenth day of December and has become a custom in recent years I'm going to share some of the 10" 33 RPM Christmas records from my collection. These size records are next to impossible to find these days so I have to dig deep into my collection to find some things I haven't shared with you before. I'm not sure these are the best shares I'll give you all season to be honest, but at least they all come from the medium sized records that are slightly flexible (as opposed to those other ten inch record made from shellac that break at the drop of a hat). Let's see where's a good place to start. How about Alexander Schreiner-Christmas Carols (The Musical Masterpiece Society MMS-38, Mono, 1955)? One of my first record-owning experiences as a young collector was when my dad brought home a pile of books and records that someone had given him rather than throw it away. I don't remember any of the books I pulled from the pile and read, but I do remember one of the records. It was on this same MMS label and it featured a take of Toccata & Fugue In D Minor, a classic organ track that I played over and over and over again at the top volume of my little stereo set. I couldn't have been much more than ten years old at the time, but I still remember being excited to find a song I knew on one of those free records. Ever since then, I always pay special attention to the records on this label, especially the Christmas ones. I assure you, this is not the only recording on this label you will see today, but it is the first. :)

1. Joy To The World
2. I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day
3. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
4. Silent Night
5. Hark, The Herald Angels Sing
6. The First Noel
7. O' Little Town Of Bethlehem
8. It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
9. Away In A Manger
10. O' Come All Ye Faithful

  1. Schreiner was the organist at the Salt Lake City Mormon Tabernacle for many years.

So it was Bach that got you into record collecting?

    1. Bach was part of it. I think that was one of my earliest albums. I had a few other country singles at around the same time.

  2. Reminds me if and when the organist played during one of our Masses, they always played solemn music in this style as the congregation arrived or departed from Mass.

    1. Did you just post the same comment twice on two different records? If I have to record all these records, you have to come up with unique comments for them! :)
