Power Pak Plus

I almost forgot I had this sampler album from Power Pak that features tracks from what's probably all the albums in the instrument-focused series I've been sharing with you. Going by the track listing here, I'm missing a handful of instruments. Going to have to dig those up somehow, though I've probably already got half of them somewhere in the archives, I just can't lay my hands on them. Looks like we need saxophone, banjos, steel guitars and harmonicas. So I guess I'm missing more instruments than I have. That's too bad. This collection also misleadingly advertises Bobby Helms and his big hit Jingle Bell Rock right there on the cover, but this is not the hit version and doesn't really rock very much at all. Poor guy recorded that song half a dozen or more times trying to relive the glory days for other labels over the years. I was working towards gathering them all up at one point, but it's a daunting task and I just wasn't up for it. I kept spotting new versions and I couldn't tell if it was something new or a reissue of something I already had. Gonna take a braver person than I to put that catalog project together. Anyhow, for the more discerning collectors out there, this is Christmas Album (Power Pak/Gusto PO-507, Stereo, 1974).

1. Bobby Helms-Jingle Bell Rock
2. Dee Mullins-Remember Bethlehem
3. Nashville Sax Featuring Jerry Tuttle-Here Comes Santa Claus
4. Nashville Banjos Featuring Vic Jordan-Little Drummer Boy
5. Nashville Vibes Featuring Don Tweedy-Silver Bells
6. Jeannie & Al-Winter Wonderland
7. Jimmy Griggs-White Christmas
8. Nashville Steel Guitars Featuring Jim Baker-Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem
9. Nashville Pianos Featuring Willie Rainsford-The Christmas Song
10. Little Roy Wiggins-Blue Christmas
11. Nashville Harmonica Featuring Randy Charles-Silent Night
12. Nashville Guitars Featuring Dale Sellers-Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree

  1. I actually really enjoy this compilation. Dee Mullins' "Remember Bethlehem" is, as the kids say, a bop.

    1. Yeah, I shared that from a 7" 45 last year, and always enjoyed it when it played. They really tried to make that a hit, but it never happened.

  2. Wow, this really takes me back. "Remember Bethlehem" would get radio play on country music stations back when Christmas music played only on Christmas Day (and a few songs the day before and after, and that was it!). It reminds me of my grandfather...Thanks, Ernie!

    1. Oh, and it's me again...Joel C. I have commented before, perhaps under the "online name" of either Jumbliah or Jeremiad; I can't remember which...

    2. I don't think I'd ever heard it before last year, but I like it. Thanks for the comment and glad you could stop by.

    3. Yes, that song is so quirky that it is hard to forget! The hokey vocal bee-bops are laughable, and the reference to Mary as a "shabby little country girl" (as well as everything else shabby!) was eh, different. But, hey, I would assign it to an English class for analysis; it's right up there with "The Sound of Silence" and "Lookin' out My Back Door" I'd say! ;) Joel C.

    4. There's little room for proper grammar and sentence structure in music. :)

  3. Hi Ernie,
I really enjoyed this one. While I rarely listen to music anymore while organizing, today I did. This one really kept me moving. Glad you shared it. I have 2 left to hear from this group. If they are as good as the first share and this one, then hopefully one day you can find and share the missing albums.
