10-11

Getting late here, I don't know how much longer I can keep this up. There are only so many ten inch records in the world, and only a small fraction of those are Christmas related. (If you really dig the 10" format, be sure to check out my buddy Buster's blog. He named his blog after the 10 inchers, but he's strayed from his roots and often shares out all different size records from 7" to 16", and everything in between. Tell him Ernie sent you!) But before you go over there, I've got another record for you to download. It may only be ten inches in diameter, but it still packs a big punch. It's another budget release, but listening to it really makes me think I'm in the mid-fifties enjoying a Christmas with my wife, our two-and-a-half children and a dog and a cat that that somewhat tolerate each other. This is another one I hope to find time to dive into the history of later this season with a couple different 12" versions and different covers. It's a convoluted story, believe me. Until then, this is When Christmas Comes To Our House (Waldorf Music Hall 10" 33 RPM MH 33-140, Mono, 1955). Looks like I had a couple different versions of this one as well, it's all in the download for you to explore.

1. The Brigadiers Quartet With Michael Stewart And Enoch Light & Orchestra-Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
2. Artie Malvin-Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer
3. The Brigadiers Quartet & Orchestra-Jingle Bells
4. Michael Stewart With Enoch Light & Orchestra-Jolly Old Saint Nicholas
5. Waldorf Music Hall Chorus & Orchestra-White Christmas
6. Dottie Evans With The Brigadiers Quartet-When Christmas Comes To Our House
7. Artie Malvin-Twas The Night Before Christmas
8. Waldorf Music Hall Chorus & Orchestra-Adeste Fideles

  1. Hmmm...I can't play this one with Windows Media Player or one other media player, but one called "DVD and Blu-Ray PLUS" will play it. The other downloads I've grabbed this year have all played with Windows. Strange...

The sound quality is really good and it does sound like a '50s flashback.

SCTV did a bit more than 40 years ago about a family with "2-1/2 children" where they cut the left half off a kid for the bit. I think the late Joe Flaherty played the father.

    1. I keep having to reboot my laptop to get it to play any sound at all, but that's likely unrelated to what you're experiencing. If you figure out the problem, please let me know. I noticed that some of the image files I generated are huge, I guess I wasn't using enough compression. I wonder if that has anything to do with these random issues?

    2. When I try to play it with Windows Media Player I get this:

"The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

Everything else I downloaded works. I'm not sure what I used to unzip the file; is it possible that that makes a difference? Why would it work for all other downloads? Don't you hate rhetorical questions?

    3. I dunno, this one was converted with Media Monkey from WAV to FLAC same as all the rest. Weird.

    4. My all-purpose answer: try unpacking the zip file with 7-Zip rather than the Windows utility.

    5. I had (or may still have) a different program (ice-something or something-ice) to extract files that I used to have to use before I got this machine but Windows 10 just extracted everything and now I can't find the old un-zipper. I'll pass on yet another program. I don't even remember when/how I got that "Blu-Ray PLUS" thing. If I run into any more issues I'll go find 7-Zip. Thanks for the tip!

  2. I'm looking forward to that deep dive!

  3. Unlike a lot of budget label releases, these Enoch Light productions actually identified the artists using their real names - Artie Malvin, Dottie Evans et al.

    1. Well, I've seen reissues of this stuff without much in the way of attribution. :(
