Christmas From France
Some years ago I discovered a single Christmas track from this artist that I shared out during Christmas in July, and I remember Wondering if they had a full Christmas album out there. Well, it turns out that they do, I found a copy, and I'm sharing it with you here now. If you like your Christmas with a bit of French sprinkled on top, then this is for you. Please download and enjoy Sacha Distel-Noël (EMI (France) 2C 064-10180, Stereo, 1968). Looks like I shared out a single from this LP last year, too.
1. Noël Blanc (White Christmas)
2. Ding, Ding, Dong (Jingle Bells)
3. Petit Papa Noël
4. Je Reviendrai Chez Nous A La Noël
5. Si Grande Est La Terre
6. Noël A Bethleem
7. Chante Noël (Silent Night)
8. L'enfant Au Tambour (Little Drummer Boy)
9. Les Trois Oranges (O Tannenbaum)
10. Les Rois Mages (L'Arlésienne)
11. Priere Pour La Nuit De Noël (Adeste Fideles)
12. On Croit Toujours Un Peu Au Père Noël
The Wondering is usually what gets me into trouble. I would have a lot more money (and a lot less records) if I did a lot less Wondering.
ReplyDeleteBeing stuck at home for a year or so during the Pandemic cured me of a lot of my wondering. But not all of it, as you can tell. :)
DeleteThanks for this one - I like Distel!
ReplyDeleteSurprised he never broke through in the states, but then I can't think of any French artists who hit it big here...
DeleteThe biggest would probably be Maurice Chevalier. Other singers who had some success include (off the top of my little head) Yves Montand (primarily as an actor), Jean Sablon, Edith Piaf, Les Compagnons de Chanson, Charles Trenet, Jacques Brel and Charles Aznavour, among others, I'm sure. No mega stars with the possible exception of Chevalier.
DeleteDon't forget those 60 French Girls! :)

Do you have Christmas in France? CHRIIIIIIIIISTMMAAAAAAAS
ReplyDeleteNoel!
DeleteMaurice Chevalier, Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Yves Montand, Charles Trenet (Beyond the sea), Sacha Distel (The good life), Claude Francois (My way) and many many others ... plus canadian/french like Gisele MacKenzie and many many others ...
ReplyDeleteWell, if you're throwing in French-Canadiens, then Michael Buble would be the biggest I can think of. Or Celine Dion. But those are more modern than the rest.
DeleteI really like all these artists (well, maybe not Celine). Someone gave me a vinyl copy of Buble's Christmas record this year.
DeleteBuble seems like a nice guy, but I often wonder how much input he has in his choice of arrangements. Some of them are good, some of them aren't. And too many rip-offs of the classics. But he's famous and I'm not, so what can I say?
DeleteAlso Gilbert Becaud (What now my love and September morn) ...
ReplyDeleteHeard the name but not familiar with him.
DeleteSacha seemed like he could have been popular, in the USA or Canada, but never seemed to be known much in either.
ReplyDeleteAnother artist, that at least sang in French or similar... was "Christmas with Nana Mouskouri". She was at least popular in Canada.
I always thought she was Greek? I should look these things up. And everyone has forgotten about Mireille Mathieu!

I did forget about her - and I have one of her Christmas LPs.
DeleteI've shared her more than once and didn't think about her!

You are correct, Ernie. She was Greek, but her a lot of her Christmas songs appeared to be in French, or in Belgian...
DeleteI met a guy in Greece once on Soulseek and he was a big fan of Nana, always telling me all about her. I think he was also the guy who first pointed me towards The 'Fa, said he'd found a great source for downloadable Christmas albums! I'm forever in his debt for that. :)
