Up The 101

Only a few more hours to go until the big day, I guess I need to go out and do some shopping. We agreed to not get each other gifts this year, but you know how that goes. At least I'll be far away from that side of the family when they wake up and realize I didn't get them anything. But for my loyal visitors, I've got plenty for you. Here's another remaster from the early years of the blog, the very first year in fact, 2005. I've never been the biggest fan of purely string-driven Christmas music, but I know a lot of my visitors eat this sort of thing up. So for you I present 101 Strings-The Glory Of Christmas (Somerset SF-7100, Stereo, 1958). What have I got here, four different covers for this same music? I stuck the nice velvet flocked version there at the top, but I think my favorite is the green one below with the cast of It's A Small World on it. They truly tried a little bit of everything to sell a few more copies of this record over the years.

1. Silent Night
2. While The Shepherds Watched Their Flocks
3. Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem
4. The First Noel
5. Adeste Fidelis
6. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
7. O Tannenbaum
8. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen; Good King Wenceslas; Jingle Bells

  1. Huh, only eight cuts? LOL, sounds like a ten-incher. Thanks for sharing, Ernie, enjoy this kind of stuff, from time to time. Merry Christmas, love and praying for y'all.

    1. Budget label, saving money on the music, though there are some longer medleys.

  2. TupeloBrian's family had the red cover but i'd swear the label said Stereo Fidelity. 1961 stereo console slightly predated me.

    1. There could be a stereo version of the red cover, but I don't have it. Was yours fuzzy?

    2. I believe Stereo Fidelity was another Miller International label.

    3. Sounds right. But it all came out in mono on the other label.

  3. HI Ernie,
    1. Thank you for uploading this album for the additional scans, etc.
    2. I love everything about Somerset-Ashire. I try to collect every release from them. Even if I have to piece a few releases together myself.
    3. This album is 28.16 minutes long, somewhat standard I guess. Although, Somerset-Alshire would release shorter and longer playing time albums.
    4. The new owners, Countdown Media GmbH, part of the GMB Music Group, own the Somerset-Alshire catalogs, and are re-releasing these albums in quite nice, if not beautifully new digital remasters from their original master tapes.
    5. This album was digitaly remastered from its original master tapes back in 2016, and has been on offer since 2016/2017.

  4. In 1995 Canadian Madacy Music Group acquired the complete Alshire catalog from Al Sherman. Alshire and the 101 Strings Orchestra recordings today are exclusively owned by Countdown Media GmbH, formerly a part of Madacy, and since 2011 a subsidiary of new music company BMG.

  5. My grandfather recently passed, and I borrowed some of his Christmas CDs from Mom to listen to, and this was one of them (and probably the second best album in the stack).
1998 release from Madacy, 22 tracks, and they're a bit shuffled from this 8-track list.

    1. Didn't it have tracks from some other group making up the balance of the CD? I feel like I've seen that before.
