Doc & Some Sisters

A slightly odd collection of performers here, or at least some fairly random guest stars among the big-name TV preacher Richard Roberts and friends. The Seventies were truly an odd time, can you imagine this collection showing up on your TV for Christmas viewing? Doc Severinsen doing Sleigh Ride at double speed? I guess The Lennon Sisters aren't that big of a surprise on a religious show, but it still strikes me as a bit odd. And then they all get together for a big finale at the end. I need to see if any of this is at YouTube. While I go jump into that rabbit hole, please download and enjoy Christmas Celebration (Light LS-5654-LP, Stereo, 1974).

  1. Never saw this one before! The one that I have from them is a late-'70's/early-'80s' copy of Christmas with Richard and Patti that I bought at a closeout store close to my house when I was a kid growing up in the mid-'80's.

    1. So does it have the same music, or is it a different album altogether?

  2. Again, thank you so much, Ernie. I have been looking for all the Ralph Carmichael Christmas albums. If I remember correctly, Ralph started "Light Records" after he had been the Studio Orchestra at "Capitol Records" It doesn't appear that I have this album yet :) Some of the Albums, that I have are the straight album... not broken up into Tracks. I prefer to get them broken up.
    You are beyond awesome!

    1. Yeah, I've seen shares where people just record a whole side of an LP and share it out. I hate having to go in and finish the job for them. I try to make sure my shares are about as good as they are going to get, even going so far as to share cut and uncut sides when appropriate.

  3. The latter. Features mostly duets between Richard and Patti. Best to try to find a thrift copy of this one; E-Bay is selling this one for 88 bucks right now! :

    1. Well, they're asking $88 for it, that's not nearly the same as someone paying that for it. That cover is awfully familiar, I'm sure I have it around here somewhere, though I wouldn't be able to lay my hands on it.

  4. The Doc sleigh Ride on this is better than his cut on the Command Christmas album!

  5. Lennons great as always on their solo selection. Good Ralph Carmichael arrangements.

    1. I meant to go back and compare this version to the one they put on one of their LPs. I suspect it may have just been a studio cut they supplied for use on this album. I could be wrong...

    2. The Lennon Sisters must have done a fair amount of singing concerts with Ralph Carmichael. They are also on an "Army of Stars: The Family at Christmas" 1986, Lexicon Music (part of Light Records). I don't know many other times they did combinations together though.
On a side note, I am trying to download all the "Army of Stars" albums :) Can't wait for you to post them, Ernie :)

    3. Those are hard to get through. I've tried, but the music just isn't to my taste. :(

  6. Thanks Ernie. It would be wonderful, if you could also post the "Christmas with Richard & Patti Roberts" 1972 album. I only have the Go, Tell it on the Mountain track, from that album. It sounds similar, but hard to tell if they are the same.

    1. Maybe someday. I thought about doing a lot more of those TV preacher albums this season, but never got around to it.

Interesting rendition, but it sounds like they just sped up the recording. The singers sound so un-natural. They had to much material for the broadcast, so to cram it all in, it was sped up.
I only listened to this one track Ernie at your suggestion. By listening to this complete album, they probably would want a "Love" gift sent to them.

    1. I never thought about it being sped up. There used to be video of the TV special up on YouTube, I wonder if it's still there and you could watch him perform. Doesn't seem so fast that it's impossible, but maybe.

    2. I just remember back in the early 90s, that they would slightly speed up a theatrical movie for TV, so they would not have to edit out to fit the time slot. While, it was very un-noticable, once you knew of this practice, you could catch it...usually on the end credits.

    3. I remember when they used to speed up the end credits like crazy. If they sped up the whole film that way, it would look like a Keystone Cops Caper. But I'm sure they sped them up slightly when needed. Couldn't let them run into the News At 11.

  8. maybe my youngish sensitive ears noticed it...

  9. I just remember reading in the newspaper about it, because in some of our classes we needed to read the newspapers and then write up whatever was asked of us.
I read, that in a 2 hour block, the program was something like 96-98 minutes long. So, if a films running time was, lets say, over this by a few minutes, they slightly sped it up instead of editing out those few minutes. Credits also took the blunt. They did mention the percent of this speeding process, but they said is was negligible. But, I rarely watched a lot of broadcast TV anyway, unless it was something special.
I guess it would be something like listening to an album versus a CD. Our ears/brain does not process the missing parts or whatever it is called, when listening to a CD version.

    1. I think the days of editing vinyl to fit on the CD are behind us, but it used to happen a lot. There are even a lot of examples of music being sped up to fit on a single side of a 78. My buddy Buster corrects for that all the time. My ears are rarely sensitive enough to notice.

    2. Yes I have noticed Buster saying something like this when I have checked out his blog. He mentions something about correcting this or that.

My current thing is trying to find a "free" program on the internet, that is easy to use, as in being understandable, to help remove clicks and pops from an MP3 file.

    3. The best one is ClickRepair, but the developer died and it's not available anymore. Even if you find a download of it, you need a key to open it. If you can find a cracked version of that, it's the cat's meow. Everything else I've seen either didn't work as well or cost a pretty penny. You can do a so-so job in Audacity if you want quick, dirty and free.

    4. Thanks for this information.
Something tells my brain that sometime last year I found out about ClickRepair and downloaded it. It was on some guys blog. But, I ended up deleteing the files. So, I cannot remember what it actually was in those files.

      I will hunt again.

    5. Been using it for over ten years now, and everyone seems to like it. I love it and hope I never loose access to it, but as computers change, I worry it will stop working. :(
