Charles Emerson Winchester, III

I love finding appearance by celebrities, especially on local records like this that no one has heard of. The guest star here is David Ogden Stiers, a name almost as ostentatious as that of his best-known role on M*A*S*H, Charles Emerson Winchester, III. He also guest stared on Star Trek: The Next Generation as an older gentleman who has a bit of a relationship with Troi's mother. So this ticks off two classic TV shows if you're keeping score. He has a bit of a welcome speech in the beginning, then he silently conducts one of the tracks. Not sure why the best picture of him they could come up with for the sleeve is so blurry, but that's what you get. The music is well-played, but it's nothing too exciting. Your biggest takeaway here is that introduction. This is The Portland Symphony Orchestra-Bruce Hagen, Conductor-The Magic Of Christmas (Portland Symphony Orchestra No Number, Stereo, 1981). FYI, this is from Portland, Maine, not Portland, Oregon. Thought you'd want to know.

  1. I wonder just how many Christmas albums there are out there that use 'The Magic of Christmas' as a title?

  3. Ernie,
Back when I was a kid, I bought (from the same collectable record store mentioned previously) a three-record set called The Magic Of Christmas. I have no idea who produced/compiled it or when, but some of the songs were the first version of Sweet Little Jesus Boy (don't know who sung it) I had ever heard, the theme from Holiday Inn (sung by Bing and company), Unto Us (from Isaiah 9:6) from Handel's Messiah (don't know who again), The Boston Pops (I believe it was) Slayride and a whole host (is that the correct spelling) of others. I remember, the third record in the box, was a whole lot harder than the other two and all the mono cuts throughout the whole set, were in fake stereo. Any idea/info on this set? Merry Christmas, praying for y'all.

    1. I'd hate to hazard a guess right out of the blue, but possibly a label collection. You'd have to zero in on an artist, then search Discogs for all their appearances. Might take a while but you'd find it eventually. Only 246 records to search through with that title, and how many of them can be three record sets? :)

    2. Any chance it's this one? Seems to hit most of your memories.

  4. Ernie,
It's very possible. It's also very possible, that my records were out of order and that's why it took a while for the titles to jog my memory some more. I haven't seen the set in like thirty years, so reckon I'll/we'll never know, but it's a real good guess LOL. Merry Christmas and thanks, praying for y'all.

    1. My experience with Columbia box sets for the record club is that the records aren't clearly labelled side 1, side 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 at all. Each record has a catalog number, and a side number, you have to line up the catalog numbers, then the sides. It can make for confusing listening.
