I don't think we had a chance to visit Philadelphia between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I'm going to throw this in here before we miss New Year's too. A Ceremony Of Carols is not something I share out around here often, but it's as much a piece of the Christmas cannon as any other piece of music I feature frequently. Just because it's not pop music doesn't make it bad. Here's an excellent version sung by a choir from Philly, mostly the female members of the choir, if memory serves. The First Day After Christmas

If you've been around the blog for very long, you'll know that the fun doesn't stop just because the big day has come and gone. We try to keep the Christmas spirit going for as long as possible. Most years we make it all the way through the twelve days of Christmas, and I've been known to keep the fun going into February on an occasion or two. Not sure how it's going to play out this year, but I'm doing my best. Here's a share for Boxing Day, if you choose to celebrate that. If not, you can download the share anyway, I don't mind. Here's another good record for you on this fine Christmas day. I'm not sure about the provenance of this record, it was pressed in Miami, Florida, USA, for a label in Columbia and the band is from Puerto Rico. The world just gets smaller everyday I tell you. Pretty sure I've shared something from these guys before. Before the day gets away from me entirely, this is Los Diplomáticos-Navidad En Puerto Rico Con Los Diplomáticos (Discos Fuentes (Columbia) 203359, Stereo, 1966). I always think that cover model looks a little like Connie Francis, but that may just be because she wore a similar outfit on one of her album covers. Oh, and The Diplomat is a pretty good show on Netflix. I think they're on season three now. Give it a shot.

On Second Thought

I wasn't going to share this record because there were a couple of bad skips in one song, but I spent a couple hours playing with it and I think it's a little better now. I can still hear it, but I think that's because I know where it is and I'm listening for it. It also fades in just a little bit late, but I'm sure you won't notice that bit. Sounds Of A Master

High noon on Christmas day, what better time for a little bit of Christmas jazz. I'm not the biggest jazz fan in the world, but I think this is a pretty nice release no matter what kind of music you like. My only regret is that this is a mono copy (though I'll mention that I've gotten my grubby mitts on a stereo copy since I ripped this one, so that's likely to be coming your way next season), but it still sounds nice. I picked up this copy at a nice little record store in St. Pete, Florida. The owner of the shop knows I'm a Christmas music aficionado and he pulled this from his own collection to sell to me. I've never seen a copy in the wild, so I paid his price and was happy about it. You've still got half your Christmas day left, so why don't you download and listen to The Mastersounds-Happy Holiday (World Pacific WP-1280, Mono, 1959). Certainly not your usual carols on here.

Land Of Ice

Merry Christmas! The big day is finally here! And as a special Christmas present for you, I've got a record from the closest I could get to the North Pole, even closer than Canada, closer than Finland, closer than anywhere else we've ever visited musically here at the blog. Well, I didn't measure it out on a map or anything, but in my mind it's about as close as you can get. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a Christmas record from Iceland! How long this has been in my collection I have no idea. But I happened to pull it out of the stacks one day and once I realized where it was from, I knew I had to share it. The only thing I didn't like about it was the poor color registration of the cover image. It was like that on the original LP I scanned, and I couldn't figure out how to do anything about it. If there are any imaging experts out there who think they can fix that horrible print job, please give it a shot. But we don't really care about the album cover, we want to listen to the music. It's a nice mix of local music, some American hits translated into the local language of Bjork and some other stuff that I don't even know how to categorize. So for your Christmas day enjoyment, please download and enjoy Gleðileg Jól – Fjórtán Jólalög (SG Hljómplötur (Iceland) SG-029, Stereo, 1970). It took me forever to get all those strange characters and accent marks in there, I hope I got most of them right. Don't ask me how to pronounce any of these names, they are all beyond me.

First Thing In The Morning

It's early Christmas morning, and time for my obligatory religious record of the day. This time it's a group from a Christmas college out west that I thought had a great cover and some nifty graphics on the flip side and the labels. This is The Harvester Choir-CHRISTmas (To Live Is Christ Recordings SLPS-6310 (Southwestern Assembly Of God College), Stereo). Took me a while to figure out why the band name on the front of the LP didn't match the name on the labels. I think that's because the labels reference the name of the school, or it's students (The Southwesterners), but the actual group is called The Harvester Choir. And I think every song on the LP is by some subset of the choir. There are a couple of cool doodles on the back of the LP that are well worth the price of admission here, though the record was in rough shape and didn't lay flat on the scanner bed and are thus a bit blurry. Still cool though.

I'll Have A Bluegrass Christmas

Really getting last-minute now, I hope you're more prepared for the big day than I am. I've spent so much time on this blog that I'm not even close to ready for tomorrow. Oh well, people will have to understand how important this Christmas music is to me, as I'm sure it is to you. Otherwise, why would you be hanging around my blog on Christmas Eve instead of gathering around your tree? I thought so. Only a few more hours to go until the big day, I guess I need to go out and do some shopping. We agreed to not get each other gifts this year, but you know how that goes. At least I'll be far away from that side of the family when they wake up and realize I didn't get them anything. But for my loyal visitors, I've got plenty for you. I've never been the biggest fan of purely string-driven Christmas music, but I know a lot of my visitors eat this sort of thing up. OK, I wasn't sure about that last record, but this one has got to be Canadian, right? This is Les Tremblay Et Les Gagnon-Le Temps Des Fêtes Chez Les Tremblay Et Les Gagnon (TC A1 (Canada) A1-L.J. 33-201, Stereo). Yes, that's a Canadian label so this has got to be from Canada. Not sure if both bands perform on all the tracks, or if they alternate or what. There was no info on the record that told me who plays on what so I just said everybody played on everything. Perhaps I should have listened close to see if I could figure out who did what. But I'm way too lazy for that. I suggest you download it and see if you can figure it out. When you do, let me know.

I think this is actually an American release, and the artists may be French, but for some reason I have it in my head that it was created for the French Canadian market. I could be way off base on that though, I've been wrong before.

As promised, here's the second record put out in support of the Ontario lottery, released one year after that last one I just shared. It's more of the same, performed by the same studio band using the same dated eighties production techniques. Some good songs though, don't get me wrong. I can imagine putting quite a few of these songs into a unique Christmas mix, especially some of the ones with interesting stories. It's hard to find new music that gives you a good solid Christmas feeling, and I think some of these fall firmly into that category. Christmas is just around the corner, so it's time for some music from right around the corner from the North Pole. Of course I mean something from our Canadian friends to the north. Their territory stretches almost to the North Pole, but not quite. Close enough for today's purpose though. There's no picture of them on the back sleeve, and wouldn't that be a big selling point?
