Nutcracker In July 22
Cracking good nutcracker for you today, or at least I hope it is. They don't get more budget label than this, well, at least not ones that are credited to somebody. I suspect that the anonymous ones are the worst. This one is credited to The Viennese Symphonic Orchestra-Kurst Woess, Conductor, and the LP is titled Tschaikovsky-Nutcraker Suite-1812 Festival Overture (MasterSeal MSLP 5004, Mono, 1957). Hope it's worth a listen.

Wöss was principal conductor of the Tonkünstler Orchestra from 1946 to 1951, the NHK Symphony Orchestra from 1951 to 1954. From 1956 to 1959 he was chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (then known as the Victorian Symphony Orchestra). He was principal director of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz from 1967 to 1975. (Discogs)
As to "Viennese Symphonic Orchestra" (non existent) - info suggests it might be a "scratch or session" orchestra comprised of musicians from Vienna.
Record label credits during this period was always doubtful, as I am sure you are already aware.

Wait, the Melbourne Symphony, as in Australia? Or is there a Melbourne in Europe I'm unaware of? Surely it's not the Melbourne here in Florida.
ReplyDeleteThe recording was made in 1951 for the Remington label. The orchestra was the Tonkünstler Orchestra Vienna, but they also went by "Viennese Symphonic Orchestra" and "Austrian Symphony Orchestra" on records. B
