Kennedy's Second Term

Here's a classic oldie that I've been able to re-encode for you at a higher bitrate, as well as add a different cover to the share!  You might remember this share from 2012 as the one that is twice as long as anything I've ever shared from a single LP because the record spins half as fast.  That's right, 16.66666666 RPM is the speed of this one, not the usual 33.333333333 or 45 RPM. Somewhere in my collection I have another LP from this same label and artist of non-Christmas songs, and I thought I had another Christmas album from them until I realized it was the same tunes with a different cover.  It's good stuff!  I think you'll enjoy Will Kennedy's Stereo Orchestra-Stereo Christmasland (Dancetime 12" 16-2/3 RPM LP WK-5000-S, Stereo).

1. Rudolph, The Red Nose (sic) Reindeer
2. Greensleeves
3. I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day
4. I Saw Three Ships
5. O Tannenbaum
6. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
7. Silent Night
8. Over The River And Through The Woods
9. Adeste Fidelis
10. Joseph O Joseph

15. Good King Wenceslas
16. Come, All Ye Shepherds
17. Jolly Old St. Nicholas
18. Joy To The World
19. Winter Wonderland

Not 100% sure which came first, but I've seen the cover with the woman on it a couple of times now, but the cover below I've only ever seen once.

  1. Off hand, I don't think I've ever seen a 16 2/3 rpm record in the wild, but you seem to have one with two different covers. Plus another one, if I read you right.

Were these used for dance classes or something?

  2. This specific record, I'm not sure. I kinda thought it came with a console or something to play along with the available 16-2/3 RPM setting. Most of the records I see that spin at that speed are spoken word sermons or lectures, and certain kiddie records. The fidelity is lower, which isn't too much of a problem for spoken word stuff. This album is certainly the exception.

  4. We had a portable record player with the 16 RPM speed. My dad listened to his New Testament Audio Book with it. GM tried to popularize 7-inch 16 PRM records in its cars in the mid-50s with the Highway Hi-Fi system. Records for the system were manufactured exclusively by Columbia Special Products, and could hold roughly 45 minutes of music or an hour of speech per side.

Thanks for sharing this, Ernie. It has made for a really enjoyable evening of listening.

  5. I'm glad this is back. I enjoy this record. It's been in rotation for a few years now since it's original share. Thanks for this upgrade.

  6. Back in the seventies, we had a stereo with a turntable that had all four speeds, an am-fm tuner, and an 8-track tape player. And a reversible needle for playing 78s and everything else.
