Dolls, Puppets & Toys-Part Five

Folks of a certain ago will certainly remember the artists on our next record. And I think many folks will recognize them even though they had been off the air for decades before they were born. I don't know how to explain the enduring popularity of Kukla, Fran & Ollie, but I think many people today still know of them. It's easy enough to draw a line from them to Mr, Rogers and then on to Sesame Street. If you're not familiar with them, this record is as good of an introduction as anything else, all that's missing from the show are the grainy visuals. Please enjoy Kukla, Fran And Ollie-Merry Christmas From Kukla, Fran And Ollie (Decca DL 8192, Mono, 1954). I'm giving you a couple of download options here. You can get the uncut version and listen to each side in one big track, or you can get the tracked version and listen to each individual song. Side 2 is one long track anyway that only features the creator of the show, Burr Tillstrom, reading a poem by James Thurber. It's not really Christmas but I throw it in for the sake of completeness. I've wanted this record for a long, long time and finally found a reasonably priced copy in the last year or so. Good stuff.

Boxing Day

Here is another batch of Christmas cards from my visitors on this Boxing Day. Thanks so much for these! Hope you all had a great Christmas! Don't forget that the Christmas around goes all the way to Epiphany so keep checking in.

Dolls, Puppets & Toys-Part Four

Got a couple more puppets here for you, another remaster from 2012. These two may not look like much, but you might be interested to know that both puppets are voiced by Tammy Faye Bakker herself!  This was long before she seemed to become a caricature of herself so I'm sure she was being quite sincere in hoping that these puppets could entertain people. Some of the asides she throws in there as an attempt at education are pretty funny. This is Susie & Allie-Christmas With Susie & Allie (PTL PTL-LP-1848, Stereo, 1984)

Dolls, Puppets & Toys-Part Three

Finally, something new for you today. It's easy to do remasters because I already have the records, but I have to stop sometimes and make sure I have something new to share. We've had a couple of dolls already today and now it's time for a puppet in the form of a fellow named Shotgun Red. Some of you may be old enough to remember the TV show that he and Ralph Emery had on one of those country music networks back in the 80s. It turns out that they released at least two Christmas albums together and I've got one of them for you now. I'm still looking for the other one, these things take time. Be sure you scroll on down because I've got a little bonus for you here and I don't want you to miss it. This is Ralph Emery & Shotgun Red-Christmas Together (Blossom Gap NR15710, Stereo, 1984). Fun stuff!

And as promised, I've got a bonus single here for you. For many years before he teamed up with Red, Ralph Emery was a popular county DJ, hosting many radio programs for decades before moving to TV. And he was also a recording star for at least this one Christmas single. Not that he sings, but he does a fine job on a couple of classic Christmas tunes in classic recitation style. This is Ralph Emery with Music By Harold Bradley-Christmas Can't Be Far Away b/w Christmas Dinner (Liberty 7" 45 RPM 55524, Mono, 1962).

Dolls, Puppets & Toys-Part Two

I couldn't redo my Heidi record and not do the same thing for good old Tammy, so here she is! Tammy seems to be a doll that's quite similar to Heidi, and the records share some of the same info, but the music is different. I didn't get my Tammy record up until 2010, so she's a little younger than Heidi (though I see both records were released in 1965). Not sure if the dolls were friends in real life like Barbie and, well, other Barbies, but I like to think they were best buddies. If you liked the other one, you'll like this one, and it's remastered this year to sound better than ever! This is Tammy-Merry Christmas With Tammy (Little World Records/Ideal Toy Company LW-906, Mono, 1965).

Dolls, Puppets & Toys-Part One

Well, that's it, Christmas has come and gone. You blink and you miss it. Seems like just last week I was on a ferry crossing Lake Como in Italy and now Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas have all gone by. New Year's is fast on the way, too. But I'm going to try to hold onto that Christmas spirit a little longer by continuing to share crazy Christmas music from vinyl with you. I usually go at least through the twelfth day of Christmas, but we'll see how far I get this year. I tried to get all the best stuff out to you before Christmas, so some of the stuff I have left in the pile may be B-roll items. Hopefully there's still something in there for you to enjoy, and it'll keep in the tin until next year, I promise. Up here early in the morning is a remaster of a singing doll record that I first shared with you back in 2008 and it's been a recurring thing ever since. I re-recorded it this year just because I thought I could do a little better job than what I'd done in the past. I hope you enjoy it. If you had one of these dolls when you were a kid, please leave me a comment and tell me all about it. I hope this record brings back many fond memories. Maybe If It Were Colder

Just a quick post today to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas! Thank you all for stopping by and making me a tiny part of your holiday. It's raining outside at the moment, and it's expected to do so all day. If I lived in a colder climate, then we'd have a white Christmas, but here in Florida it's just a shower. Thanks again for your support this year and in years' past. We'll see you bright and early tomorrow with a few more shares to top off your hard drive.

A King For The King

I'm closing out the night before Christmas with a remaster of an old favorite, again something that was frequently requested by visitors this year. Pete King was a popular behind-the-scenes supplier of music, orchestrations, arrangements and all things musical for many years, working with many of the biggest names in the business throughout the Sixties. And he's been a popular part of this blog since I first shared his Christmas album in 2007, and I've remastered it for you now. I'm also throwing in a few bonus tracks that have featured during various Christmas in July celebrations, at least this way you have them all together. This is The Pete King Chorale And Orchestra-Christmas Time (Kapp KS-3214, Stereo, 1960). That's all I've got to share with you until after Christmas. I may check in with you tomorrow, but I'm not posting any more shares until Boxing Day. I hope you've had a great season up to this point, and you have a great day tomorrow. I'm very tired and might sleep through the whole thing.

Record Clubs, Part IV

If you thought that last share was massive then you're going to love this one. This one covers three full slabs of vinyl and they aren't short sides. I had at one time thought this one was a superset of the last collection due to the inclusion of many of the same oddball titles, but a comparison of the two proves them to be two completely different recordings. I do again believe this is the work of multiple performers, conductors and arrangers though, and again most likely English in origin. They didn't even bother to credit this set to a made-up ensemble, they just left any name off completely. I've seen some people credit the producers or engineer as the artist, but I don't think that's right, so we'll just go with Unknown Artists for the time being. This is Unknown Artists-The Glory Of Christmas (3xLP) (Columbia Musical Treasuries 3xLP P3S 5356, Stereo, 1967). Perhaps you don't like the idea of uncredited music, or maybe a three record set is just too much for you. Well, in that case I've got another share for you. This set consists of only two records, but all the songs can be found on the three record set above and they are the exact same performances. They're now credited to Terry Baxter, an imaginary person that Columbia credited with many of their record club special releases. His name is on a lot of stuff they put out, but nowhere else. If he's real, there are a few researchers who'd like to talk to him for his side of the story. I don't personally think he's ever going to turn up, but I've been wrong before. You really don't need this share, but I recorded it all and I'm going to share it. This is Terry Baxter, His Orchestra And Chorus-The Glory Of Christmas (Columbia House 2xLP P2S 5756, Stereo, 1967). Again, this duplicates the first two records found in the set above, just with an artist credited.

Record Clubs, Part III

Up next in our survey of releases from ye olde record clubs is this huge two-record set from Columbia. It's credited to The Columbia Musical Treasuries Orchestra but I believe that's just an imaginary group and the actual music is by a number of different session groups, probably based in England. I'm basing this on the wide number of styles found here, it doesn't sound to me like the work of one single group under a single leader. But I could be way off base here. This is a nice large collection that I'm sure you'll enjoy, assuming you don't still have the copy you got from Columbia House back in the Sixties. This is The Columbia Musical Treasuries Orchestra-The Magic Of Christmas (Columbia Musical Treasuries P2S 5246, Stereo, 1968). Jack Is Back!

We interrupt today's theme to bring you this special remaster that has seen quite a few requests lately. I first shared this record twice back in 2007, first in the original mono issue from 1957, then in the stereo reissue from a couple years later. The reason for the reissue (and retitle) was the success of the song Little Drummer Boy by Harry Simeone and his chorale. Harry claimed a big chunk of the songs composing royalties, yet here was a version released before he performed it. It was the subject of years and years of litigation to no one's satisfaction. But you don't care about any of that, you just want the music. I've only remastered the stereo version (it's the same recording on both) and the title and track order are taken from that version as well. But for the sake of history, I've included five different covers that this music has been issued under. Have a look and a listen to The Jack Halloran Singers-The Little Drummer Boy (AKA Christmas Is A-Comin') (Dot DLP 25,233, Stereo, 1959).

1. The Little Drummer Boy

Have you been really good this year? Have you kept your room clean and washed behind your ears every single night? Then I think maybe you deserve a little something nice from Santa. Here's a single from Jack Halloran and his singers that he released on Frank Sinatra's Reprise label a few years after the album above. As you'll see, he's trying really hard to copy the sound that made a hit out of The Little Drummer Boy. This is The Jack Halloran Singers-What Can I Give Him b/w The Christmas Star (Reprise 7" 45 RPM 245 Promotion Not For Sale, Mono, 1963).

Tonight, Tonight, Tonight

I'm supposed to bring some Christmas music for a little get-together tonight, and it's so hard to choose something to bring. I'm thinking about that Holiday Innovations record, and another that I ripped but can't share because it's on CD somewhere. But what else should I take? Obviously I can't bring the whole stack because most of it's terrible. I need to narrow it down to the best of the best. Give me a hand here...

Record Clubs, Part II

Next up in our collection of records from record clubs is courtesy of the Columbia Record Club, later known as Columbia House. I found this record rather late in the season and had no idea I even had it. It was filed away with a bunch of other records featuring collections of the Alfred Burt carols and I suspect I assumed it was a reissue of one of the others. But it's not, and that means I've got a great collection of those carols that were all the rage for a while to share with you here today. I won't bore you with the details, but here's another great collection of tunes you had to join a club to be able to listen to. This is The A Cappella Choir Of Columbia Musical Treasuries-The Compleat Alfred Burt Christmas Carols (Columbia Musical Treasuries/Columbia House DS 551, Stereo). Enjoy! If you're enjoying this sort of thing, there's an older chorale album in the archives that may interest you by John McCarthy and I believe it was also a record club release.

Record Clubs, Part I

The loose theme for the day is records that were produced for record clubs. You remember when you were just coming of age and you wanted to start growing your record or CD or tape collection. You'd see those ads in the magazines advertising twelve records for a penny. Of course you ignored the fine print that told you about the monthly new releases that were automatically shipped to you and how many of those you were obligated to purchase before you could quite. I joined quite a few times and probably still owe somebody somewhere a few bucks, though I haven't seen a letter from them in quite a while. (If you've never heard of such a scheme then you're just too young!) Anyhow, many of these clubs existed and they would often put together special records just for members. You couldn't buy these at the store so if you wanted what the had to offer, you had to be a member of their club. Sometimes these special records were just compilations of tracks from other records, similar to a greatest hits collection, but sometimes it was exclusive music recorded (or at least sold) exclusively by the club. This first club exclusive is from the mighty RCA and consists of two side-long medleys of Christmas favorites. I think it's very well done and sounds nice, but you have to carve out a lot of time to listen to such long medleys. This is Royal Philharmonic Orchestra With Brass Bands, Organ, Bells-Beecham Choral Society-The Ambrosian Singers-Peter Knight, Conductor-John McCarthy, Chorus Master-Joyful And Triumphant (RCA Victor CSC-305, Stereo, 1963). I suspect this was created in the UK for this American release, and it may even have seen a normal release over there, but I haven't been able to track that down if it exists.

There was one earlier remastered share of a record for the RCA Record Club this season. I had thought about saving it for today's theme, but I thought it fit better into the pile of harp records I was sharing that day. Go check it out if you missed it.

Radio Hits

Back we go to the island of Puerto Rico for some unfamiliar Christmas music. To be honest, I'm not even sure this is all considered Christmas music. But it's clearly got Father Christmas right there on the cover, so that makes it worth a listen. It's good stuff, but it's not at all what I'm used to. If anyone can shed some light on any of these tunes, please clue us all in. Looks like WKAQ is still an active station in San Juan, though the format doesn't appear to be the same. Getting late, Christmas Eve is tomorrow, I need to go do some shopping. Who knows what stores will be open tomorrow. Who knows what stores are still open tonight, but I'm gonna find out. Real quick, this is a collection of songs dedicated to the mother of Jesus, one of the other stars of the Christmas story. Gold (No Frankincense, No Myrrh)

I can't believe I've waited this long to share this one with you. I think many blog visitors are going to really dig this one. It's all strings and they really nail the warm sound of the Beautiful Music that really says Christmas to some people. This group apparently headlined The Flame Room, a restaurant at the historic Radisson Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. Please don't confuse The Radisson Hotel with the Radisson Inn hotel chain (though they do seem to be related), this was one of those grand old hotels like you might see in a movie from the 40's. The Golden Strings were formed in 1963 expressly for performances in The Flame Room, and performed there nightly until the hotel closed in 1981. The building itself was destroyed by implosion in 1982. So that puts a date on this record between '63 and '81, but I'm guessing it's close to the end of that range. You'll really enjoy this one I'm sure. Please give a download to The Golden Strings-Holiday Request Album (Sound 80 S80-173-8128S, Stereo). There was a business card from Gold Bond Stamp Company attached to the cover of this record, I've included a copy of that in the download. That might help provide some clues as to the date of this record, but I couldn't get anywhere with it.

Santa And His Sack

Santa will soon be headed all around the world, and I'm sure he'll go much faster than I've been going around here. I've tried to take you to as many different places as I can, but it's taken all month and we've only toured around Europe, South America and some Caribbean Islands. And this share takes us back to Europe for a country we've skipped up to now, Denmark. At least this time the music is authentic as it's produced there for the local market. It's good stuff, some of which you'll recognize but a lot of which is liable to be new to you. If you're a fan of Christmas music that's different from what you're used to, then this might be just the thing for you. This is Jul Med Dansktop-Kunstnere (Philips (Denmark) 6403 506, Stereo, 1971). T.C. Stubblefield Returns

Some years ago I shared a weird record out right after Christmas, one that I didn't know much about and was intrigued about. Now I know a little bit more, and I have another record by the same fellow. This album features many of the same tracks as the other, the dig difference being a large medley on the other one that was taken from the movie that record was meant to promote. So that means the record I have for you here today has more tracks. I still can't tell you which came first, and I can't tell you much about the artist. But I've grown to like the artist a bit, and I enjoy it when his songs come on the player. I believe this record has been issued twice, and I do have the other cover somewhere, but I've lost track of it at the moment and can't offer you scans of both. But I can offer you this one, so here is Troy Cory-Troy Cory's Songs Of Christmas (AKA Christmas Is:) (Cinema Prize C25 74 B, Stereo)

Take A Picture

Some nice Christmas tunes on the piano here, courtesy of Haskell Cooley. Don't know anything about him, or JoLee Cooley who I assume is his wife. She wrote a couple of originals here and they aren't too bad. Give 'em a try, you might like 'em. What else are you gonna do, go Christmas shopping?  Too late for that. This is Haskell Cooley-Pictures Of Christmas (Herdline HR-104, Stereo, 1978). How does he get all these sounds out of that little tiny piano on the cover? That's smaller than the one Schroeder plays!

1. Pictures Of Christmas
2. What A Wonderful Day Christmas Is!
3. Winter Wonderland
4. Do You Hear What I Hear?
5. Silent Night
6. Christmas Coming Down
7. Keep Christ In Christmas
8. Jingle Bells
9. Away In A Manger
10. Joy To The World
