2022 At 78 RPM-Part 50

Please allow me to barge into the avalanche of Christmas vinyl for your weekly infusion of Shellac goodness. This series has been going on since the very beginning of the year, but there's still a few weeks left for me to squeeze in everything in the folder. And the past month was a good one at The Internet Archive, and I was able to add a bumper crop of 78s to the sharing folder. That means you get a huge 50 tracks in the download today instead of the usual 30. The bad news is that 18 of those are from a budget-label collection where they squeezed three songs to a side, so the fidelity leaves a little something to be desired. Many of you will recognize the tracks off of various other records, but they're still worth a listen. That still leaves 32 other tracks about which I have no reservations. There are a few repeats in there that sharp-eyed visitors might recognize. Sometimes I try to grab cleaner copies than I've shared in the past, but I think these are repeats because they came with picture sleeves this time around. I always enjoy sharing artwork with you when I can, so I hope you enjoy that as much as I do. Other than that, there's not a whole lot to talk about here, it's just another great selection of tracks from 78 RPM records courtesy of The Internet Archive. Enjoy!

OK, here's a record that isn't strictly Christmas, but it has snowflakes in the title, and it's by Julie London, so who cares! You'd probably listen to Julie sing the "P" listings in the phone book and enjoy it, I know I would. Who knew that the head nurse on Emergency had such a career before TV? I certainly didn't. This is Julie London-Arranged & Conducted By Ernie Freeman-When Snowflakes Fall In The Summer (Liberty 7" 45 RPM 55605, Mono, 1963).

Funny story, I didn't pay for this record. I was in a local record store trying to find some interesting Christmas music, and the owner of the store was really talking me up. Everything I asked about, he had an answer for. But he didn't have a Christmas music section, so I had to dig. I dug through three or four boxes of 10" records because I figured there's be a greater chance of finding something I didn't have in there. And sure enough, I found two religious records on 10" red vinyl that at least looked neat, though it was all organ & chime music. But then when I asked the guy for a price, he wanted $15 each! I'm thinking these things have sat in his store since it's been open, no one else in their right mind is going to buy these things, but he wants to charge me an arm and a leg. Of course he couldn't find them online to back up his crazy price, but that only meant they were rare. And red vinyl! Looked unplayed! Gotta be worth more than $15, what a bargain. I barely escaped without laughing in his face, but before I left, he gave me this record since I was looking for a Christmas. He said it wasn't in good enough shape to sell, so I said thanks and left. Later on, I found two other copies in the stacks, so I'm glad I didn't pay anything for it. Anyhow, this is Jessie Belvin-I Want You With Me Xmas (Modern 7" 45 RPM 45x1005, Mono, 1956).

I wanted to say a big Thank You to all the fine folks who responded to my earlier post about sending Christmas cards to Meredith and I. We were both touched by the outpouring of appreciation from so many of you who took the time to send cards, letters, notes, even CDs. Thank you so much, they were all very much appreciated. If you love Christmas music like I do, then you're probably well aware of the folks at Real Gone Music. They reissue a lot of music every year, and Christmas time is no exception. Year in and year out they find some classic Christmas music and do it up right with a legit release on CD or vinyl, often featuring bonus tracks, going back to the original master tapes and creating the best sound possible. One of their featured releases for the season this year was an expanded reissue of Steve & Eydie's 1964 Christmas record, That Holiday Feeling. It's a good one to begin with, but they've added unreleased tracks, songs from singles, album tracks, whatever they could find. But whether it was something they couldn't license, or (though I doubt it) something they didn't know about, they missed a track. And I've got it here for you. On the LP it's sung by Steve Lawrence, who co-wrote it with Berl Rotfeld, but on this singe from 1961, it's sung by Eydie. So once you've bought the reissue, download and enjoy Eydie Gorme-Arranged And Produced By Don Costa-Let Me Be The First To Wish You Merry Christmas (United Artists 7" 45 RPM UA 283, Mono, 1961).

More NFL Christmas

There are plenty more Christmas songs out there that connect back to the NFL, and here's a small selection of tracks from 45's that I threw together for you. Three installments of The Twelve Days of Christmas series by Elliott, Walter & Bennett featuring The Atlanta Falcons, The Buffalo Bills and The Philadelphia Eagles. (I guess my closest team, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't exist back when this series came out, or they weren't good enough, so they didn't get an entry.) There's also both sides of a single by Willis "The Guard" & Vigorish called Merry Christmas In The NFL. Good stuff here!

(Notice that I got an odd version of the Atlanta Falcons record where they're known as 'A Atlanta Falcon'. They're football players, what did you expect?) Oh, almost forgot I shared out The Twelve Days Of A Cleveland Brown Christmas a couple of years ago, and I included the non-Christmas B-side that all the records have in common.

The Commanders

I don't pay too much attention to professional football, but I understand there was some recent hubbub about this team's name, and the negative connotations to the Native American community, and understandably so. But this record predates all that, so no offense intended to anyone. But singing NFL players is pretty funny no matter how you look at it. I guess all the teams in the league back in 1970 had a collection like this, all with the same songs and the same backing tracks, adding in custom vocals by whatever players they could get to participate. This is the only one I've ever happened to stumble across, but I suspect that once you've heard one, you've heard them all. This is The Washington Redskins-Holiday Halftime (Manlius MAN 2030, Stereo, 1970).

It's by the tongue-twistingly named Malchak & Rucker (though it appears to have been released at one time by just Malchak, with a mention of Rucker elsewhere on the label). The two tracks are Christmas Is For Kids b/w All I Want For Christmas Is Your Love (Revolver 7" 45 RPM REV 84-006 Red Vinyl, For Radio Use Only, Stereo, 1984). Nice.
