This Is Only A Testor

Unlike some other records I've shared recently, this is one that I already knew I had in the collection, yet I was excited when I came home with a second copy a couple of months ago. I had tried to record that original copy a few years ago and the record was just too full of skips to get a good recording. This new copy played like a charm and sounded quite good. Long-time visitors to the blog may know that I love to share music made by corporate choruses, groups of singing employees that get get together after work to sing and make music. There are may examples of this here at the blog, but two of my favorite old shares are by employees of Snap-On Tools and Garcia (the fishing reel company). The entry tonight is from a chorus of people who work for Testor, the company that makes those tiny bottles of paint you used to buy to paint your scale model cars and monsters. Who would have thought that such a niche operation as that would have a company choir. But here we are. Interesting story about this recording in the liner notes, so be sure you take a look at those after you download The Testor Chorus-Christmas Carols From Many Lands (The Tester Corporation No Number, Mono, 1959). The side contents are flip-flopped on the back of the sleeve versus what was written on the labels. I went with the labels since they matched what was actually in the grooves. I see mismatches like that a lot more than you might expect.

1. Excerpts From Handel's Messiah
2. Christmas Day
3. Swedish Dance Carol
4. The Snow Lay On The Ground (Venite Adoremus)
5. What Can This Mean
6. Carol Of The Drum
7. As It Fell Upon A Night
8. Silver Bells
9. Sanctus (From The Requiem)
10. Winter Wonderland

  1. Thanks Ernie for sharing this. I am currently taking a Hoppy break to listen to this. I have skipped track 1 until later.
I have started a new "Companies" folder and downloaded the 5 shares listed within your comments. I have to separate these from the "Stores" folder.
So far I like what I hear. Somewhere between amateur and professional singers and recordings. I understand your enjoyment in these.

  2. Testor made not only the paint bottles for model cars, I believe they also made the glue for putting them together. I was a customer.

The company is still around; can't speak to whether the chorus is as well.
