Like Honey To A Bee
Here's yet another Christmas album from an artist I've never heard of but which seems to have some following out there. When I first spotted this record in the stacks (no idea how or when it got there, I don't remember buying this) I thought it was Cissy Spacek playing Loretta Lynn. I guess that's not at all the case, but that is certainly the vibe and look I got when I first laid eyes upon it. Not sure the music is in that vein at all, but I can't help but expect it to be. This is Honeytree-Merry Christmas-Love, Honeytree (Birdwing BWR 2029, Stereo, 1981).
1. Christmas Suite: Joy To The World; Silent Night; God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen; What Child Is This?
2. Coventry Carol
3. Il Est NĂ© Le Divin Enfant
4. Children's Song Of The Nativity
5. The World's Desire
6. Some Children See Him
7. Christmas, Joy Of Children

Wow, what a find, Ernie! Honeytree was quite well known in the CCM community at the time Keith Green, Randy Stonehill, Phil Keaggy, Larry Norman, Barry McGuire, et. al. were at their peak. She had an interesting song-writing style and way of expression that was a little more "Jesus Freak" than I was, but hey, she is classic (at least for the few of us!). Thanks, Ernie! Joel C.
ReplyDeleteThere was some talk about her somewhere online that I saw a couple months ago, but I had no idea who she was. Then this record popped up in my collection, so I grabbed it. Hope you enjoy it.
DeleteYes, I was going to agree with Joel's comments. She was huge in the mid-to--late-'70's in the emerging CCM scene. I grew up listening to her self-titled and Evergreen albums on Myrrh Records in my parent's record collection and I still have them. Did not know she recorded on Sparrow, though. She served as a mentor for Rebecca St. James, sister of the Smallbone brothers of for KING & COUNTRY (subject of last year's Unsung Hero movie) and last I heard, she still makes appearances on CCM Legends tours. Looking forward to checking this one out.
DeleteIt's weird when I stumble across an artist that so many people know about, yet I've never heard of them. Glad I grabbed this one for sharing this year.
DeleteCorrection: It was Evie who served as a mentor to Rebecca St. James, not Honeytree. You shared Evie's Christmas albums here in January of 2024.
DeleteI actually found one of those Christmas albums by Evie on CD the other day. Well, I thought I'd found it, but it was just an empty case. :(
DeleteMerry Christmas - Love, Laurie G.

DeleteHoneytree. I think I remember her. I also love anything CCM and Jesus Freak. Thank you so much, Ernie. I also love anything by Birdwing :)
ReplyDeleteDon't think I have anything by Birdwing, but they sound like quote the pair. Birdwing and Honeytree. Maybe they'll be in the new Hunger Games movie. :)
DeleteBirdwing was a special event subsidiary label of Sparrow Records that put out children's albums like The Music Machine, I Am God's Project, and Bullfrogs and Butterflies, as well as worship records like John Michael Talbot's the Last Supper. Grew up listening to all of those records in mine and my parent's record collections when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteOh, I've actually heard of some of those, didn't now anything about the labels though. Thanks for the info!
DeleteYou are welcome.
