25-Some Things For Xmas

From the Winter tracks yesterday, we move on to a day filled with songs about Xmas. I don't have a strong opinion on the use of Xmas as a shortcut for Christmas, but some people sure do. I was always told that the X was a reference to the early Christmas using the Greek Chi character to represent Christ, but that may just be a tale I was told. I'm sure the truth is out there, but I'm too lazy to open a Google window and ask. Not all the tracks today have Xmas in the title, but it's a good chunk of them. I don't think any of these tracks refer to the X in Xmas or lament it's use, I think I put those few tracks elsewhere that we haven't seen yet. I should have put them here now that I'm thinking about it but it's too late to change now. Christmas is in a few days and I really need to do some shopping. Leave me a comment and let me know your favorite track here. Enjoy!

  1. I never would have thought there were so many "Xmas" records. You even have the variant "X-mas" on one.

    1. I'd hoped to get the whole 45 tracks, but just couldn't do it. Maybe in another 20 years...

  2. Thank you for all of your postings! It wouldn't be Christmas (or July) without your music blog. I've discovered so much wonderful music here over the years that our family enjoys at the holidays. All the best to you and yours!

  3. Thanks for all the shares this year Ernie. Great stuff as ever. And you are correct about the X being shorthand for Chi/Christ. It basically made things quicker for monks writing it lots of times! A fuller explanation is on my Christmas info site - link to the page in my name bit!

    1. Some people just don't understand what they're objecting to... :(

  4. So many good ones! My favorites are Eddy Howard, Dora Hall, Eddie Fisher, and the Hollyridge Strings. Great to also see the Lennon Sisters in this playlist as well. Looking at some of the labels, a handful of these must have needed a LOT of TLC to make them sound presentable here at the blog.

    1. The software does all the heavy lifting, I just have to make sure they play through. Didn't have a whole lot of trouble with skipping considering how many songs I ripped from disc. Could have been a lot worse. :)

  5. I'm guessing you prefer the 45's you buy to be as pristine as possible, but I love seeing the notes and labels from previous owners (ie. the note for The Rovers - "NO NO NO").

    1. Well, mint copies are nice, but expensive. I've rather get 20 records in Good shape than just one Mint record, I feel like I get more out of my money that way. But it's nice when I can still read the label. There have been a couple of things shared this year that I thought were just scribbled all over, but closer inspection reveals they are autographed!

    1. I had shared both her Christmas singles back in 2010, and re-recorded them all for sharing this season. You'll have to hunt them down as I've got them all mixed up. There's a search feature at the top of the blog if you're viewing it on a desktop PC...

  7. Hi Ernie,
Some tracks stood out, but there were some others too...
Anyway: Shari Lewis, Paul & Richard Freites - for special reasons, The Duncan Sisters, Dora Hall - it must have been great being her child or grandchild and Yolanda White.
