31-Space Age Santa Claus
Here we go with one of the best themes of all, unfortunately I think it's the one I had the fewest songs for. It's all sorts of songs about Santa that involve space travel somehow. We've got a few songs about outer space Santa, some songs about Santa going to Mars, some songs that mention Santa flying to the moon and back, as well as some things that you'll just have to hear to understand. Since it was such a small collection I had to pad it out with an even smaller collection of stuff and that turned out to be songs that imagined Santa using a CB or interacting somehow with truckers. That was a pretty popular topic back in the 70's when songs like Convoy and movies like Smokey And The Bandit were all the rage. I've even got one in here from the UK where I understand that the infatuation with truckers lasted a bit longer than it did here. Anyhow, that's two themes for the price of one, feel free to separate the songs into two individual piles if it makes you feel better. And as always, enjoy!

The Al Hirt song is one of the better songs to feature a childrens chorus; However, Al has the feel of a supporting player than being the top-billed performer on the disc. Never heard that one before; lots of fun!
ReplyDeleteWhen my friend who was on the Songs of the '60's Facebook group had his radio show in the area where I live, he would play "Captain Santa Claus & his Reindeer Space Patrol" for many Christmas seasons and would comment on the homemade space sound effects that the producer and engineer overdubbed later. The Anita Kerr Singers do a great job doing the kids voices on the Helms number.
ReplyDeleteis, not was.
DeleteExcellent remastering on the Julius LaRosa selection; it sounds better than the one posted on YouTube. Great version of "O Holy Night" that is totally new to me. Will be playing this one a lot for many Christmases to come.
Deletemy friend also would play "Santa and The Purple People Eater" during the Christmas season on his radio show as well.
DeleteGreat to have the Johnny Desmond song on here; I think it was on YouTube a few years ago before the account got taken down. He sounds great here; will definitely be on the lookout for that and the Julius EP for my collection.
ReplyDeleteThis is the greatest concept yet - Santa in space and on the CB radio! "Zoomah the Santa Claus from Mars" is a Barry Gordon effort I haven't heard before.
ReplyDeleteYou keep me surprising Ernie! And gee, I love it! Thanks.
