2022 At 78 RPM-Part 12

Time to make this an even dozen shares! And because of that, I'm going to share out a dozen tracks instead of the usual ten. Well, both because it's the twelfth share and the fact that I netted over 120 tracks from this months' 78 dump at Internet Archive! Certainly not all of those were new to the archive, but the new records frequently lead me down rabbit holes to find stuff I've missed in the past, so that probably contributed a little under half the total. I even managed to track down a few Chanukah shares which are really hard to find! But none of those in the pile today, just some great sides with some great looking labels, and for some strange reason, two versions of White Christmas. By the time I noticed that, it was too late to spend the time and energy to change it, so that's the way it is. Hope you're all enjoying the shares!

No home improvements to report on lately, though I'm happy to report the old fridge is still running like a well-oiled machine, even with it's ugly barn door hinges. The new fridge money is sitting in the bank happily earning half a percent interest every year.

2022 At 78 RPM-Part 11

For the second week of March, I gathered together a large selection of spoken word pieces and whatnot, all spread out over multiple sides of their respective pieces of shellac. If you're not interested in that sort of thing and you only want songs, this might be a good post for you to skip. But I hope you don't because there's some charming stuff here, going back a little over 100 years! Sharp-eyed visitors will also notice that I've now got the second record that was missing when I shared a couple of these sides back in 2020. I didn't even realize at the time that I only had sides one and two of a four-sided collection. Anyhow, give these a listen and let me know if there's anything you like.

When did the header up top change? The moon used to be to the left and a Phil Harris 78 was on the right. Now all I see if the header overlayed onto the moon. Blogger has probably been messing with the code again...

2022 At 78 RPM-Part 10

Well, here we are in March! Seems like just yesterday it was Christmas, and now we're three months past and well into 2022. I've kept this series of 78 RPM posts up for a good long while now, and I think it's going pretty well. Hope you're enjoying it as much as I am. Much as I did at the beginning of February, I've got a special share for you today. It's some promo records from the early 50s that went to radio stations to play alongside popular Christmas music of the day. Stuff like this is hard to find and rarely made available to the public. Thankfully, the Internet Archive got their hands on them, digitized them, and shared them with the world. I take no credit for any of that. All I did was download them, clean them up a bit, and share them here for those of you that don't hang out over there and incessantly search for likely keywords to find cool stuff. First up is a Christmas Seal selection from Perry Como, including a specially recorded introduction. The song was released commercially so it's not all that special, but I'm throwing it in anyway. Next up are a couple of things from Spike Jones, one pair of which isn't especially Christmassy but it's for a song they gussied up to make it a Christmas tune, while the other sixteen (!) tracks are for a well known Christmas tune that everyone loves. Though after hearing all the parts of a fifteen day countdown to Christmas, you may be a little sick of Little Georgie Rock.  Have at it, and thanks for continuing to come by!

2022 At 78 RPM-Part 9

Almost through with February and the 78s just keep coming! The haul from The Internet Archive was extra big this month, over 60 new titles, which means I have more songs in my folder to share than I started out the year with. And that means there might be some super-sized shares coming your way, or maybe some extra weeks to bring out total to more than 52. I haven't really decided what to do yet, but I'll figure out something to get all these great songs out to you. In the meantime, why don't you jump in and help yourself to this week's share, a great set of ten tunes, including something written by Dick Leibert, but not recorded by him. You never know what you'll find at The Internet Archive!

In other news, I replaced the faucet on the kitchen sink. Turns out that I didn't need to because I found a screen deep inside the mechanism that was almost totally clogged up, but I didn't know it was there. I thought the cartridge was plugged up and I couldn't get it out to replace it. So I just started over again. The process was rather straightforward until I couldn't find the special wrench they used to install it. That necessitated a second trip to the hardware store, but they didn't have what I needed. I got a deep-well socket set instead, but they weren't deep enough. I went hunting through my old toolbox, and found a short stubby wrench that did the trick. Second trip was necessitated when I got close to the end and wound up trying to connect a 3/8" female end to a 1/2" female end. That trip forced me to come home empty handed when I couldn't find a likely adapter and I realized I wasn't sure of the thread types. Next morning, armed with a little more info, I went to a new hardware store and came home with a handful of adapters to do the trick. Sure enough, everything screwed together and worked fine until I turned the water on, and water sprayed everywhere out of my new joints. After a few tries, I discovered a discovered a washer on the old hardware that wasn't on the new hardware. A few more tries and I figured out how the washer was supposed to work. At that point, everything worked after only being screwed together hand-tight. Which matched the way I took it apart, actually. I was poking around and it came apart when I turned it with my fingers. That's why I jumped in thinking the whole thing would take half an hour. Eighteen hours later, we put the kitchen back together and enjoyed the new free-flowing faucet. Next up, the Insinkerator! It's been frozen up and leaking through a cracked casing for years. I gotta attack it while I'm feeling brave. :)

2022 At 78 RPM-Part 8

Another great week of shellac sharity here today, but in my mind they're all good. I'm trying hard to space it out since I have a whole year to cover, but my eyes are still drawn to the shiniest songs I have in my folder, so try as I might, the later stuff is going to be worse than the earlier stuff. Thankfully though, the Internet Archive continues to share out Christmas goodies on a monthly basis, so I'm constantly throwing new stuff into the pile. In fact, this month's new shellac dump started a few days early, so I've been downloading new goodies since last Thursday. I've learned quite a bit about the processes they follow to share out so much music, and it turns out they add new stuff once a month, not continuously as you might think. Looks like a good crop of stuff this month, so that'll fill up my folder fast. Some months are much better than others, but there's always something I can find. I'm rambling a bit because I don't have anything to pad out the post this week like the refrigerator story. Thankfully I don't have to deal with stuff like that all the time or I'd be a nervous wreck. I'll shut up now and let the music do the talking. Enjoy the music and I'll see you next week!
