21-Cheers To You At Christmas
Another day, another collection of great music from 7" 45 RPM records in my collection. The records today came a really long way to be here as they are all from the United Kingdom! Note that many of them feature a small hole in the center instead of the more familiar large hole that we get here in the US. Some of them do feature a large hole and I believe all of those are US issues of music recorded and originally released in the UK. Of course I could be wrong about a few of them, but I believe most of them are from jolly old England. I ordered at least one batch of 45s from England this past spring but the rest of them are things that I've found here and these over time. I decided to see if I could pull them all together to make a great playlist. I almost called it 'A Proper British Christmas' before I decided to use a track title, but I think the 'Cheers' in the title kind of tells you what you need to know. If you don't enjoy this one I'm going to put you on the naughty list!

Right good collection, old egg. You even have the Goons on 45, plus Ebeneezer Moog!
ReplyDeleteEbeneezer Moog is da bomb, if you like that sort of thing. :)
DeleteAs a Brit, I'm loving this collection! The Goons, The Joy Strings and Morcambe and Wise are Christmas classics! And The Wombles and Orville are songs from my youth! But Bros... really?!?!?! ;)
ReplyDeleteSend me a pile of 45s from the UK and I'll do a better job next year. :) Stuff that's common enough over there is hard to find here. I was pretty happy I came up with 45 songs...
DeleteFun group here! Never heard the club mix of "Coldcut's Christmas" - Also fits with your Discotheque theme: Nice use of the saxophone sample from Marva Whitney that 7 years later would be featured in "Let Me Clear My Throat". Also the Julian Cope song stands out- loving these compilations that show the diverse offerings of a specific country!

Hard to find enough songs to make a comp like this from most countries, but I was pretty excited to make this one with a couple expensive purchases from merrie olde England.
DeleteDear Santa Ernie,
ReplyDeleteYou are so prolific that I'm having a hard time keeping up. I'm counting my blessings that there is an abundance of joy on your blog!
Thank you, again, from a little elf in Arizona.
Gotta be easier to keep up than last year. I was sharing stuff every 4 hours between Thanksgiving and Christmas! :)
DeleteJust unearthed the Gilbert O'Sullivan cut earlier this season on YouTube. And I actually prefer the Jackie DeShannon side included here instead of the one you featured earlier this season. I was totally surprised to find a PJ Proby Christmas cut included here, and I am looking forward to checking out the Petula Clark selection.
ReplyDeleteI think PJ was shared in full here a couple years back, it's a rerun.

Spent a good chunk of time Christmas night and the following day checking this out. I've got a particular interest in "British Invasion" Christmas stuff, of which there isn't a lot.
ReplyDeleteSo the big discovery here for me was the Joystrings track. From the artist name I was expecting easy listening music, like the 101 Strings or something. But it's actually rock--apparently one of the first Christian rock bands in the UK. I didn't even know that was really a thing in the 60s! It kind of sounds like The Animals if they did a Christmas song. A real treat! Liked the Korgis and Coldcut tracks as well among things that were new to me.
Yes, the Joystrings are a real treat! They released one LP in the US, and that's what this single is pulled from. Quite a few EPs in their native England though, with a lot of Christmas content. Though to be honest, these two songs may be the best things they ever did that I've heard. Still very good. Thanks for stopping by!
