02-Christmas In New Zealand-33 RPM

Here's a second installment of 7" records that spin at the slower 33-1/3 RPM speed that was originally pushed by Columbia. The other bundles this season have all featured records that spun at 45 RPM. Occasionally a record wouldn't be marked as to the proper speed and I'd get a surprised when the needle reached the grooves. I'd then have to stop and regroup. It's an interesting collection, but much shorter than my other sets (33 records at 33 RPM versus 45 records at 45 RPM). And the relative rarity of the format compared to the 45s means I had to repeat songs and artists in the collection, so don't be surprised.  The title track here is the only Flexidisc I recorded the whole season. I would have just skipped it but I liked the song so I figured I'd slip it in here. Sounds pretty good for a piece of super-think plastic. Enjoy!

  1. From the headline, I thought you were giving us 45 records from New Zealand. But this is just as interesting, including that RCA EP we were discussing!

    1. I really wanted to put that New Zealand song in the collection of Christmas places I did a while back, but it just didn't fit my self-imposed requirements. And Dinah is welcome anywhere I can make her fit. :)

I can't imagine what 45 records from NZ would sound like... And that one's a flexi, not sure if you can tell from the scan. Pretty good sound though, I was surprised.

  2. Dang, Ernie, only person who works harder than you in Dec. is Santa. Thanks, and I mean it.

  3. Ernie,
Appreciate so much, all the work you do on these and compiling them to boot. Especially appreciate the Louis/Reece cuts here. Dunno to much about David Reece, but was surprised to see his name in the folder. What I do know is, he played for The Friendly Four Quartet of Mount Airy, NC, back (probably) in the early '50s and later, for The Rangers Quartet, unsure of time frame there. Re: Mitch Miller And The Sing-Along Gang, had the album of these cuts, as a kid, good to hear them again. Miller personified what a former Chorus teacher drilled into us, make the choir sound like one voice. Who was Landmark Baptist Temple-Department 10? Oh and while I'm here, but on another share, you mean to tell me, another artist (using the term loosely) recorded Hypo, other than Gayla Peevey? LOL! Merry Christmas, love and praying for y'all.

    1. Thanks for the note. Dunno anything more about the Landmark Baptist Temple record. There are four songs on it, three of which sound about like you'd expect from a private press church record, then there's one track that sounds like a not-bad copy of The Blackwood Brothers, probably because they're copying their arrangement of, what was it, Silver Bells, I think. It's a Medley with The Christmas Song, and it's really good. Looks like it's one of the two tracks from that 7" record in here. It's a favorite this year!

    2. Thanks, Ernie. I assume, the LBT in question, is the one from Cinci?

    3. I don't know... All I had was the record, no sleeve, and the label was the same on both sides. I just used the standard titles of the songs they seem, so I'm not even sure those are what they called them. Don't think I found any trace of this one on the web, but I don't remember how much time I spent looking. At 3-5 minutes per side, I don't have a lot of downtime while the vinyl is recording.
