13-Santa's In A Jam
I finally remembered the third thing that inspired me to share these big drops of songs from 45's. (I mentioned here the first two things, but I couldn't remember the third thing...) For the past couple of years, Sony has been dropping packages of remastered Christmas singles. Last year I think there were three sets of songs from the 50's, then this year they have released one set each of songs from the 40's and the 60's. They're great collections of Christmas tracks that were released as singles on many of the labels that have since come under their corporate umbrella. All these tracks sound about as good as they're ever gonna get and there are some really obscure numbers included. Some of the tracks are things that I've recorded and shared this year, but I'm hoping I don't get in trouble for sharing my scratchy old records. I usually stick to things that you can't find anywhere else, but I'm kind of making some exceptions to that this year. Don't expect any new or popular releases to show up here, but there may be some obscure stuff that I've duplicated. (And FYI, they've also released a stack of albums from the past that you might be interested in.) But none of that is here or there, you just want to know what's in the pile today. Let's see if I can figure it out. Oh, yeah, this is an easy one, it's all songs about Santa! I certainly didn't have any trouble finding Santa songs so there are plenty of them here and it's a lot of fun. Enjoy!

Nice selection! I see that you (or someone) was in Academy Records in New York, one of my former haunts.
ReplyDeleteI think I did buy that at Academy during my one and only Christmas-time trip to NYC. Anything I don't recognize and costs only a buck I'll pick up in a heartbeat! :)
DeleteI've been going through some of these comps you've posted and checking out some of the songs. Some of them are so obscure that when I try to Google information about them, this blog is one of the top hits!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could do whole posts where none of the records show up in a Google search, but that would be really, really hard. I'm usually happy if they don't appear at Discogs or 45Cat, too, though 45Cat seems to have many more singles covered than Discogs.
DeleteGreat comp- It is amazing how many totally obscure songs you found.
ReplyDeleteFavorite so far is "The Santa Song" by Jud Strunk: now we have Santa on a Moto-Ski brand snowmobile! Thanks for letting us take a tour of the many songs of the big guy!

I was very excited when I found that one, picture sleeve and all! It was in an antique mall and the guy had a whole box of them! I asked where they came from and he said it was a storage locker. You can grab the whole package at an earlier post here:

Still listening to this one- my favorite collection so far. The song "Ol' Fatso" is hilarious! And "Mr. Russian" - nice Cold War sentiments. Great stuff!
