04-L'Orphelin De Noel

I'd like to give credit where credit is due and tell you my three inspirations for the sharity style this year. First up is a collection of Christmas singles that was put together a few years ago by an internet denizen named Jeffrey Glenn. He put together a very long list of comps from random singles and shared them with friends for years and years, calling it The Lost Jukebox. He's no longer around but his collections live on in certain corners of the internet. He shared out about a dozen collections of Christmas music (though not all of the songs included were from singles). They're a great listen, if you can find them. A second inspiration is the annual Christmas comp from DJ Lo-FI, AKA Andy Cirzan. He's a concert promoter in the Chicagoland area and his annual comps are the stuff of legend. He digs up singles each year that neither you nor I have ever heard of and weaves them into an awesome collection. He gets to spin those tunes on a radio show each season and it's one of my must-listen events of the holiday season. Here's a link to some of his old shows. (For what it's worth, I'm not on his mailing list, so I don't get hard copies of his annual comp. However, he frequently shares online links for download, and I've got quite a library of them in my collection.) Third, I don't remember, what was my third inspiration? I've got to start writing these things down. Anyhow, I've got a great theme for you today, it's all songs from Canada. And Canada encompasses a lot more territory than you might think when it comes to Christmas music. (I suspect that's due to their proximity to the North Pole.) You get plain old pop music that we get here in the states of course, but you also get a whole world of French-Canadian stuff (as well as a handful of French music) that includes some great covers of American pop music. So don't be surprised to hear some familiar tunes here with some unfamiliar words. I won't ruin any surprises, but listen close!

  1. Another astoundingly impressive collection!

I suspect your third inspiration was your charming new spouse.

It's comforting to see that the Canadians also have talking Christmas trees and rockin' reindeer. But no strangely named helpers for Santa?

    1. She says my stuff is too weird. She wasn't to listen to the Christmas At Downton Abbey all the time... And I may have saved the Canadian Christmas Characters for another day... ;)

    2. OK, great - something like Gordie the Elf, Santa's guide to the Great White North?

    1. I bought a few batches of Christmas singles from Discogs sellers in Canada, and those were some of the most interesting days when I would record them. Lots of styles and songs and surprises. It's a whole new world of Christmas music that I had only sort of skirted around before.

  3. Hello Ernie, a great and big thank you for every song you give us every time. Many of your songs are in my christmasplaylist. In this Post you have a song from the Demontigny Family Album. Do you have Robert Demontigny's Noël blanc, too? Digital and on YouTube there are just versions with a hard start. Sounds like the beginning is missing. Best wishes and regards from Germany

    1. Thanks for the note, glad I'm able to add a track or two to your Christmas listening. Not sure if I have the track you're looking for, but there are a couple more Canada-based days coming up this season. Keep watching!

    2. Hi Ernie,
You will not be able to top it. After my parents passed on, my first boyfriend-the love of my life, found this single and gave it to me. I no longer have my copy of it, but it makes me cry both in a good and bad way. I put this song out of my mind, until you brought it back in to it. Bless you. It brings back so many memories, good and bad. I love playing it on repeat now as I did back then. Thank you so much for reminding me why this song means so much to me.
