11-The Animals' Christmas Song

I've got a weird mix of themes for you today, and I still couldn't fill up the share. But it's interesting, that's for sure. First up is a bunch of animal-themed songs. Mice, goats, donkeys, pigs, puppies, even an elephant and the inevitable hippopotamus. In a very-slightly-related shift we then move on to a few songs from the fine folks at Christmas Seals, neither of which have anything to do with seals, but it made sense at the time. The third batch of songs all feature Chipmunk-style vocals, that is sped-up (and in one case slowed-down) vocals. Sometimes it's the whole song, other times it's just a line or two or a certain character in a song. There's even a disco cover of the famous Chipmunk Christmas song! It's an eclectic batch of stuff, but it makes for a bit of fun. Hope you enjoy this latest entry in this year's tribute to the humble 7" 45 RPM Christmas single! Whoops, I screwed up. Two songs in here by Linn Sheldon, one about rabbits and one about puppies. Thought I'd fixed that but I guess not. Oh, Well...

  1. I wonder if all these various artists actually got their elephants, goats, hippopotami and so on for Christmas. Not to mention Elvis and Eddie Fisher.

    1. I'm guessing no. Puppies, kittens, maybe. Hippos, no. And certainly not Elvis or Eddie.

  3. Such a cool collection! Very entertaining. Loved the "Christmas Piggy" song- any Christmas songs about Trinidad always get my attention! Also loved the Clinton Caldwell "Santa's Copter": You can never have too many helicopter santa songs.

    1. That's a weird one, Christmas Piggy. And I can only think of one other helicopter song, but I've got plenty of versions of it. Are there more?

    2. Only the one from the 50s, and one from 2010 that I know of. The "Go To Sleep Little Lamb" has to be the most disturbingly fascinating song you've posted this year!

    3. Far as I know, the Gene Autry version was the original, and Pat Boone covered it on a 60's Christmas album. I'm sure there are more. If you like the Little Lamb song, wait for the A-side. This is the sort of thing that DJ's recorded for fun in the 60's.

  4. Surprising and VERY eclectic mix of Christmas tunes in this post. I actually have the original 1963 orange label Columbia 45 of Andy's version of "The Christmas Song" in my collection, with "White Christmas" as the flip. "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" did not get released on a 45 until 1968, the same year it led off Goodyear's Great Songs of Christmas Album 8!

  5. Also surprised to see you posted the Burl Ives version of "Santa Mouse": i prefer the Jerry Vale version you posted here in 2022. Also, "If I Can Help Somebody" is the only tune on this list of songs that actually charted--in the publication then known as Music Vendor; will post the chart rankings here at a later time.

    1. All three versions of Santa Mouse will appear in due time. And I was surprised to recently discover If I Can Help Somebody was an old song. RCA had a version of it this same 1957, also for Christmas Seals.

  6. In all my years, I've never heard The Whales version of the "Chipmunk Song." Thanks for the smile today!
