N'awlins Christmas
I've been sharing out some stuff from around the USA this month, and here's another installment of that transcontinental trip. From the Big Easy this time, it's a set of Christmas tunes, both original and traditional, performed by some schoolkids, one priest, and a singer who must have been popular in the area at the time. I don't know that she went on to anything big, but this album makes her out to be a big deal. (Looks like she's still out there singing!) For your listening pleasure today, this is Sylvia Johns And The Children Of The Archdiocese Of New Orleans (with one track by Rev. Frank Coco on clarinet)-The Miracle Of Christmas (South Savings & Loan Association SMM-1001, Stereo). Love that cover shot! Especially the furniture dolly they neglected to move out of the shot, and I think there's a person lurking behind the bushes on the left side. A tourist no doubt.

Nice shot of Jackson Square in New Orleans on the cover. We were there some years ago, and discovered that the local archbishop had just passed away. We witnessed an enormous funeral march, along with bands, costumes and more, culminating in a eulogy and concert in the square. Quite an event!
ReplyDeleteLooks like this was released in 1986, and sold about 25,000 copies. Not bad! http://www.encorepub.com/duchess-of-song-sylvia-johns-ritchie-talks-new-cd-release-with-band-class-act/
ReplyDeleteTruth is i'm not really into Christmas music, though i spent the last days getting all the versions i found of the few pieces i love from you and Lee :
ReplyDeleteMostly Carol of the bells, Carol of the drum/Little Drummer Boy, Sing We noel, Go tell it on the mountain ( which is more a gospel number in my opinion ), and Christmas Is A-Comin' along with a few other i liked.
Thought of giving something back for thanks, here's some of the few songs about christmas i didn't get from you two : https://www75.zippyshare.com/v/8J7ll5yY/file.html
Hope you find something to your liking.
Thanks for the treats again, as i saw someone write it's christmas time all year round with people like you.
MEGA likes you, too. It hates me. I'm SO jealous.
ReplyDeleteLook, it's been almost a year since I ruined MEGA's Tupperware Party. Don't people ever forgive? (Downloading this now.)
