Part One, Finally
I keep talking about trying to complete the set on some of these records. Here's one where I shared volume two a while back and am just now able to complete the set with volume one. Ever since David Seville took his tape recorder speed manipulation techniques that he learned with Witch Doctor and applied them to some small furry rodents to make a hit record, everyone and their brother has tried to copy him, with absolutely no success. This record is no different, even though it seems to have been popular enough to generate a second volume. I suspect that had more to do with trying to make a fast buck out of unsuspecting consumers than with genuine demand. For the masochist in you, this is The Happy Chipmunks-Merry Christmas From The Happy Chipmunks (Holiday/Audio Fidelity HDY-1950, Stereo, 1982).
1. The Twelve Days Of Christmas
2. It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas
3. Sleigh Ride
4. Little Drummer Boy
5. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
6. Silver Bells
7. Winter Wonderland
8. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree
9. Up On A House Top
10. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
2. It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

There were two such compilations? Hard to conceive.
ReplyDeleteYeppers. If it brings in a couple of bucks, make more!
DeleteI really love all of the Chipmunk knock-off albums. Conversely, there's a 45, on Pickwick maybe? I have it somewhere in my house. Anyway, it's one of those slowed down, or more specifically I believe it's recorded with the singers singing slowly so it can be sped up. Super weird. I'll have to find it for you!
ReplyDeleteOnly slowed-down one i know of is the whales. If you have another I'd love to hear it.
DeleteRathbone, that his name.
Deletehad this album for a while when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteNow you can listen to what you are missing. :)
DeleteThank you! Now I can toss out my spliced copies :0
ReplyDeleteI probably mentioned this last time, but I had both of these Hamsters albums on cassette when I was very small, and I wore them out. One man's trash is another kid's treasure, these crappy ripoff albums will always have a special place in my heart.
BTW, in A Christmas Story Christmas, I was surprised to hear We Wish You a Merry Christmas, by The Mistletoe Disco Band. Same exact backing track as the "More Christmas Fun" version, but with different vocals. Same record label, of course (Holiday Records).
Jingle Bell Rock, Little Drummer Boy, and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus also share the same backing tracks.
Glad I could bring back a small memory for you. :)
DeleteAnd I'm not surprised to hear that they recycled some music. Someone else pointed out a similar reuse of backing track on one of the other rodent or insect Christmas records this year, but I don't remember which one. Must be a common tactic.
