What The Dickens 2

Here's another of the double albums I mentioned earlier in the season, and another retelling of Dicken's immortal A Christmas Carol. This one is not oriented towards the kids, but it was recited to a bunch of college students in New England right at the end of the fifties (then released the following year). So maybe it's aimed at older kids. The performer is a professor of speech, so he's very eloquent. It's a double album, but the retelling only take up three of the four sides. The fourth side is various speeches and announcements that aren't all that exciting to anyone who wasn't there, so feel free to skip that bit. But don't skip the rest, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. This is Delbert G. Lean-A Christmas Carol By Charles Dickens [Abridged] (Jennins Recording Service/College Bookstore, Wooster, Ohio 2xLP KO8P-3790/3791/3792/3793, 1960).

  1. Hey, the College of Wooster, just about an hour south of here! The cover is nice, although the plaid is a little mystifying.

    1. I figured that was a school tradition of some sort, but I was just guessing.

    2. That is one of the tartan's of Clan MacLeod. Not sure of the connection here.

    3. There's got to be a reason for it, we just haven't figured it out yet.

  2. I watched Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol in color at an appliance store in 1963 or '64. I had heard of the story but didn't know any details until then. I'm not sure any new production of the story has been better than Mr. Magoo ever since.

    1. I'm sure this will be a letdown after the Magoo version...

  3. I can't wait until Delbert tells me about the Kraken.

    1. See where it says Abridged in little tiny print on the cover? The Kraken isn't in this one. :(
