The Whole World

How can you possibly go wrong with an album entitled The World Of Christmas? Well, it promises more than it gives, I think, since it's all choral music from England and leaves out a really big chunk of the world. I grabbed this LP from the shelf after I saw another blog somewhere share a dozen or so records from the same series that were all rock music, or at least pop from the time, but this one wasn't nearly so interesting to my ears. Still, you might like it. This is The Choir Of King's College, Cambridge-The World Of Christmas (Argo (UK) SPA/A 104, Stereo, 1970). There appears to be a volume two of this release, but I couldn't find it in the archives. That doesn't mean I don't already have a copy, but it's functionally the same as not have it if you can't find it.

1. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
2. The First Nowell
3. While Shepherds Watched
4. I Saw Three Ships
5. Ding, Dong! Merrily On High
6. King Jesus Hath A Garden
7. In Dulci Jubilo
8. Unto Us Is Born A Son
9. O Come All Ye Faithful
10. Away In A Manger
11. O Little Town Of Bethlehem
12. The Holly And The Ivy
13. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
14. See Amid The Winter's Snow
15. Past Three O'clock

  1. You had me at King's College Choir. I'm a Brit and to me this choir is Christmas music! King's is the home of 'Nine Lessons and Carols' on Christmas Eve afternoon. I've got a page on the history of Nine Lessons and Carols over on my Christmas info site; and back in 2014, one of the King's staff was kind enough to take part in an interview with me explaining what happened in and around the service: https://www.whychristmas.com/customs/carols-nine-lessons-and-carols Willcocks' arrangements of many carols are now often the 'standard' ones used in carols services around the world. So you can get to a World of Christmas by that at least ;)

  2. Great record - I am very fond of the King's sound. I have visited the so-called "chapel" - it's a very large and grand church - and heard the choir live. One of my favorite musical memories.

  3. Another magical Chorale album. Why should it not be, when you have one of the greatest Choir's in the world. Quality in all respects shines through.
