Duquesne

Seems to be a year full of hard-to-spell place names. Tonight's tongue twister is Duquesne, which I have no idea how to pronounce, much less spell. This record was produced by the college kids at the college of the same name located in Pittsburgh, PA. Not sure what the relationship between the school, it's students, and Croatia is, but they surely loved it and celebrated it's culture every chance they got. This LP celebrates the Christmas music of the region, and it's not the only one they produced. I shared a 10" version of this very same album a couple years back, in fact, and I suspect there will be another record later tonight, you'll just have to wait and see if that turns out to be true. There are a lot of people of Croatian descent in Pittsburgh (and Cleveland and Chicago). The school's name is pronounced du-CAIN.

The Tamburitzens are a well-known group in the Pittsburgh area. For many years, they offered participants the incentive of scholarships to Duquesne University, pronounced, as correctly noted above, as closely as we Americans generally get to à la française. They also now offer scholarships to other higher-education institutions and you can well imagine how budding performers would appreciate the practical stage experience and the financial helping hand.

They were founded and remain specifically dedicated to Croatian folk music, so that explains why their holiday albums are not just another mid-summer run-through of familiar hits.
