2022 At 78 RPM-Part 18

Another uneventful week here as far as special occasions go. I certainly didn't think I'd make it to eighteen weeks, but here we are. In fact, I've still got more in the pile to be shared than I started the year out with. Each month brings a big dump of new records to The Internet Archive and their Great 78 Project. In fact, this month was probably the best yet for new content, well over 100 Christmas songs added to the pile. I'm still working on getting them all sorted out and cleaned up for you, so they'll probably start to trickle into the new shares in the next week or so. Unfortunately, there have been some quality problems with new rips at the archive, but I've spoken to them and they're going to take a look at it. About 20% of the new shares start the recording after the music has already begun, you can actually hear the turntable coming to speed with the music already playing. And then some of the versions cut off before the song ends! I suspect it's just a new person at the controls and little oversight. But I've been able to splice multiple versions together to get a good one, it just takes time. Last month they had an issue with their imaging causing many of the label photos to be overexposed and washed out. I was able to fix most of them, but you've probably noticed a few images that didn't look their usual best. But these things happen when you're processing thousands of records I month and I'm sure they'll get it straightened out. Anyhow, here's a link to this week's goodies, and I'll see you back this same time next week for more. Thanks for coming by!

  1. Another varied group, without a familiar record, as always. "Suzy Snowflake" was my favorite Christmas record when a wee tot, although in the Rosemary Clooney version. We'll see if Dale Evans lives up to my golden memories.

  2. Thanks Ernie- The time you must have put into these songs to splice together is much appreciated! Hopefully your feedback to IA gets heard. Lots of great tracks here, especially from the Canadian Bobby Gimby.

  3. Maybe I need to hear it from someone else, but so far I prefer Robert Frost's "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening" as a poem rather than as a song. But that's just me.

Thanks again for all your work here, Ernie!

  4. Thanks for all the comments, folks! Keep 'em comin'!

Buster-I don't think I'd heard Dale do this one, seems to be pretty rare.

Steve-It's work, but as soon as I complained about it, I quit having problems with it. I must have worked my way through all the bad ones without realizing it. Haven't had to splice one since. :)

Jeepster-You're in luck then, I've got a version by Robert Frost himself in the pipeline! And he doesn't sing it.

  5. Thanks for these--too bad about those clipped beginnings. But glad IA corrected the issue. Mindy Carson's enjoyable side is almost a run-through for the Line Material classics. Interesting to hear John McCormack singing a spiritual, though he seems slightly lost in spots--very rare for John! Good choral sides.

  8. Thanks for the comments!

Yes, IA has said they're actually going to redo the sides that are bad. I guess they take their archive responsibilities seriously!
