Forbidden!

Don't look now, but I'm going to share something with you that I probably shouldn't.  Something that I found just this weekend in it's super-rare stereo version, something great and wonderful that's really, really hard to find.  Take a look at the cover scan above and I'm sure you can figure it out.  If you've never heard or seen this before, it's part of a series of all four seasons, recorded in 1957 (though I'm not sure if the stereo is from the original sessions or a later re-recording).  It's instrumental and it's lush.  If you like that sort of thing, you're going to love this.  It's not strictly Christmas, but there are some Christmas songs on there.  Mostly it's cold-weather themed stuff, though a couple of tracks I can't explain.  It's all good, though, so go grab it.  Unlike most everything else I share, I put a password on this one.  That password is "ErnieNotBert", without the quotes.  Give it a listen, I think you'll like it! (For the curious, the mono version of this was a secret share some years ago.  I think this one is a significant sonic upgrade!)

  1. And for those of you who read the comments, here are some bonus shares. The mono version of Winter, in case you want to check if it's any different:

And my mono copy of the Summer edition:

Same password as the main share. These two are the exact same recordings as shared many years ago, but encoded at a new, higher bitrate so you can get a little more enjoyment out of them if you're a bitrate snob. Keep in mind they are mono, that's why they aren't at 320!

Merry Christmas to all of you!

  2. Ernie, having spent the weekend with family for birthdays - as well as having grabbed this one when you originally shared it - I am looking forward to this as much as any you've shared this year.

Thank you for finding, ripping and sharing this!

  12. Ernie, The Camarata arrangements are nice but no match for those on the Ray Charles Singers' Winter album. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but I just think once in a while comparisons should be made. I very much appreciate your efforts to find every Christmas-related record ever made. Speaking of tireless searches, I found an extremely rare, and, I believe, as-yet unissued-on-CD, Christmas 78 by Vincent Lopez from 1939 that couples "Cute As Christmas" with "Hello Mr. Kringle." I'd also like to offer the Hoosier Hot Shots recordings of "Jingle Bells" from 1936 and "The Man with the Whiskers" from 1938, if you haven't already posted them. By the way, I sent a link to the Urbie Green Christmas LP the other day. Just wanted to be sure you noticed, and if you also wanted me to compile a complete high-res collection of Spike Jones' early and mid 50's Xmas records for RCA. Can do, if you'd like. Just want to do my share for you the vintage part of the cause. It's a great cause.

  13. Ernie, I didn't mean to be too harsh about the Camarata. "Majestic Cascades" was pure Hollywood at its best, and I kept trying to identify the film from which it might have been taken. Was it a Camarata original?

  14. Very nice find, Ernie. Thanks!

  15. David, there's a little talk on the back of the LP about that song, the writing credit isn't to C. though.

Please feel free to share your collection of Spike songs here if you like, but I don't generally post other folks music to my blog. Thanks.
