2022 At 78 RPM-Part 21

Another Saturday, another post. It's week 21, so I've put 21 files in the download for you. I don't think I can keep doing that for too long, but we'll see. I want to at least get up to a 20/week average. That's a lot of music, but The Internet Archive keeps delivering. There should be a new dump sometime in the next week, and I've barely started tagging the finds from last month. It's not a bottomless well, but it's pretty deep. As usual, there's some good stuff in the pile this week, including something like a request, or at least a song someone mentioned. I've got a lot of stuff in the pile, so it's easy sometimes to shuffle things around and come out with a song that someone mentioned. Hopefully they'll see it and be excited that it's there. In other news this week, I rescued a juvenile dove that was being attacked by some bully crows. Poor guy was on the ground and couldn't seem to get away. So I picked him up and carried him inside. I put him in a box with some water, then ran to the store and got a bag of birdseed. They only had one bag of tiny seeds, and it had been slashed open at some point, but I brought it back to the office and gave him a bowl full. He seemed OK, but I brought him home to my GF who's a vet tech and a former bird minder, just to get him checked out. She decided he was healthy, he'd been eating some seed, he seemed fully hydrated and there were no wounds or breaks from the crows. We let him loose on the screened in patio and he seemed to like it, even though he was still quite shy. I had leaned the sack of birdseed against the wall when I got home, and as I walked back by it I saw some black specs on the wall. I assumed some seed had splashed up on the wall when I sat it down, and didn't think more of it. Sometime later, there were more specs. I looked closer, and there were weevils climbing the wall. Yep, the bag was full of little bugs who had hatched out of the seed and were now spreading themselves around the condo. I tied the bag of seed up inside two other bags and took it outside. I checked the box the bird had been in, and found several bugs. I checked the bowl of seed, and found many more. I checked the bathroom where the bird had been locked up for a while, and found more bugs. They were everywhere. But we kept killing them and hopefully they'll die out without more food. We're keeping the kitchen extra clean for a while, but I doubt if we've seen the last of them. I took the little guy back to work the next day. He perched on my finger as I took him outside, then he flew up into a nearby tree and that was the last I've seen of him. Hopefully he makes it just fine.

2022 At 78 RPM-Part 20

Well, twenty seems like a big number after a month of odd, well, not odd, not prime, perhaps unmemorable numbers. But twenty, that sounds like a big deal. So in honor of twenty, I've got twenty shares for the day (which is actually the same number I've been giving you weekly for a couple months  now, but pretend it's something special...). About half of the shares in the pile today are things from April's dump at The Internet Archive. I got a total of 132 new tracks last month, which may be a record for a single month. Of course not all of those were new additions to my pile or theirs. I frequently grab new rips of things I've previously shared if they look better, or even if they are simply things I liked a lot the first time around. Or maybe I just forgot I'd already grabbed them (that happens more and more as I get farther and farther into this project). Also new finds will frequently lead me into finding old things I missed. There's a lot of Christmas music in their Great 78 Project, and I don't pretend to know the names of all the songs out there. There are so many new songs to discover, it's still a great treasure hunt. But that's enough blathering. Here's a link to more Christmas music from 78 for you. Enjoy!

No new appliance stories to share with you this week, I'm afraid. I did get a new internet connection from Frontier. Jumped from 50 meg to 500 meg! And for about the same money, no less. But it turns out the network adapter in my old desktop is still stuck at 100 meg, so I need to upgrade that to see a difference. And the streaming services still stutter or buffer sometimes. There're just too many variables in the system. But it's still light years better than the old days of dial-up, which I well remember. I'd queue up a hundred downloads from Napster before I went to bed, just in hopes that half of them might be done the next morning when I woke up. Most of them weren't done, but that's more due to the users logging off who were sharing the files I wanted. It was a strange time where you turned off your internet when you were done with it. Ah, the old days...

2022 At 78 RPM-Part 19

Another week has gone by in a wink and it's time for another deep dip of Christmas music from The Internet Archive. I haven't touched the pile since last week, so there's probably no new artists in the share today, just the flip sides of things you've already heard, or things I finished up a month ago. I've been working on a special project for Christmas in hopes of actually getting something done in the next six months. Some things take a long time to bring to fruition, especially when you're too lazy for your own good. You have to strike when the motivation hits you, and I've been unusually energetic about Christmas the past two weeks. Anyhow, you'll have to wait and see about that come Christmas. In the meantime, here are twenty more great songs that you've probably never heard before, or at least these versions. It's a good batch of stuff!

Also of note, I heard back from the folks at The Great 78 Project, and they tell me they're going to redo all the bad rips that they could find. They do take this archiving stuff seriously, and it's a lot of effort to go back and do things twice. Glad that they were receptive to my notes. And my patched up fridge with the barn door hinges is still running like a champ. We even put all the pictures back up on it. Keeping my fingers crossed and my tax refund in the bank!
