Why San Diego?

I've brought you Christmas records from many places over the years, but I don't think we've ever visited San Diego. Why would anyone care about Christmas in San Diego? I don't know really. Sometimes I just find Christmas records from weird places or sometimes I think they find me. Not the best cover on this one, I think they were trying to save some money with the black and white photos so it's not the most appealing of packages. The music is nice though. I'm sure you'll enjoy Christmas In San Diego (Redletter Record Release RRR SA-103, Stereo, 1986).

1. Alan Weckler-Christmas In San Diego
2. Ellen Lawson-International Medley I: Fum, Fum, Fum; Rise Up Shepherd; Sing, Oh Sing; Down In Yon Forest; Patapan
3. San Diego Civic Chorale-Behold A Star
4. Calman Hart-San Diego Christmas Eve
5. Ellen Lawson-O Holy Night
6. John Padilla & Mike Harris-Little Drummer Boy
7. Ellen Lawson-International Medley II: Bring A Torch; Cradle Hymn; Go Tell It On The Mountain; Exultation; What Child Is This

  1. Yah, the cover looks like it could be a 1960s or so. Will have to give it a listen. As you know, Ernie, I'm also always working on my Christmas music all year long... looking for that ellusive music ;)

    1. I was guessing 70's or even early 80's. Hard to tell really. These things are hard to find and hard to date. If I was smart, I'd buy the new ones as they come out, write the date on them somewhere, then put them into storage for the next twenty years. But I'm not that organized.

  2. Well Ernie, as a kid my mom dragged me down to Balboa, which is closer to San Diego. I was scared to go into the water, I was afraid of being attacked. We spent several weeks there. I just had fun playing with the other kids my age, singing, dancing, acting up, as kids do. I just stayed away from the water, except for my feet.
Oh, one day, my father, mother, and I went to Tijuana Mexico. Talk about scary for an 7 year old boy. But, I got looks of stuff, that ended up in some second hand store, real fast.

    1. I thought you meant Balboa, Spain, there for a second. That didn't seem very close to San Diego. But I guess not if you went to Tijuana from there. :)

    2. No, Balboa Island. We stayed on the big island.

  3. Well Ernie, I had to listen to this, the Ellen Lawson album, with her eclectic guests. Quite nice. The down sides were the odes to the city of San Diego. San Diego certainly does not need to push itself for recognition, or do they?
I am wondering if the main group was actually the San Diego Civic Chorale, with guest Ellen Lawson. I am sure her fee was not small by any means.

  4. No idea who Ellen Lawson is. Should I know her? Google isn't returning any likely candidates that I can see. These collections are frequently just pot luck.

  5. I search through Edge. Rearly Brave. Maybe this Ellen Lawson, aged 76, would be the one on this album.
She also pops up on a Google search. You just need to look for a photo of an older woman. This one seems logical.

It says, she was or still is in San Diego. But things are always a mystery.
