The Mick Two

Here's another good one from Paul Mickelson, and it's very different from the last one. This time he's leading an orchestra and a choir. Perhaps that will be of more interest to you than the solo organ on the last one. Give it a listen and see what you think. This is The Paul Mickelson Choir & Orchestra-The Best Of Christmas (Supreme Productions SLP-403, Stereo).

1. Festival Of Carols: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing; The First Noel; Carols Of The Bells; It Came Upon The Midnight Clear; Joy To The World
2. O Little Town Of Bethlehem
3. We Three Kings
4. Christmas Candle
5. Gloria In Excelsis Deo
6. O Holy Night
7. Fantasy Of The Sleigh Bells: Jingle Bells; Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer; Sleigh Ride
8. Away In The Manger
9. Deck The Halls
10. White Christmas
11. Silent Night
12. O Come All Ye Faithful

  1. Well, I had a bit of trouble with this one. I kept getting "Path too long" for the first track when I tried to unzip it so I grabbed "7Zip", as Buster recommended and was able to unzip the file but 7Zip put the file somewhere that was kinda hard to find. I did find it eventually though. Now I have to go buy a bunch of blank CDs to finish this season up. Thanks for all of it, Ernie! Thanks for your help too, Buster!

    1. Glad you were able to get it straightened out!

    2. Hi JustaJeepGuy,
7Zip gives you several options as to where you want the unzipped file to go.

  2. Hmmm, is this record the same as this earlier one he released on RCA Victor? Tracklist is the same, but I need to compare the recordings.

    1. I don't think it is the same recording. The times are similar, but the waveforms don't look the same. I think they are new recordings with similar arrangements.

    2. It makes sense that it's a new stereo recording. The RCA album came out in 1957, before stereo LPs. And even though RCA could record in stereo in 1957, they saved it for the big names (Boston Pops), as it was probably quite costly. Also, had RCA recorded this Mickelson album in stereo in 1957, surely they would have released it themselves.

    3. Yeah, I think it's a re-recording.

  3. Although I have to say, I too compared the Supreme stereo LP with the RCA mono LP, and I don't notice any stark differences.

Discogs also shows us that the Supreme LP you shared appears to be a reissue; they show another issue where the record label looks distinctly late 50s/early 60s.

Could it be that Mickelson retained the rights to the (possibly) RCA 1957 stereo master tape? And then released it a few years later on Supreme -- which (I also just learned) was a label that Mickelson founded in 1961.

    1. The version i shared is mono, I think I need to find a stereo copy. Maybe it's a later reissued, I dunno.

  4. Ernie, the version you shared is indeed stereo -- check out your scans.

Listening, it's definitely not fake stereo, but it's also not what you would call sophisticated stereo.

    1. Huh, so it is. Why did I think this was the mono version? I need to go back in and update that info. I need to pay more attention...

    2. No worries! I think it's because you totally outdid yourself this season -- which is impressive considering that you've been doing this basically 3x as long as the Beatles were together.

    3. My mind was blown the other day when someone pointed out it has been longer since the Anthology series was released than it had been between the last Beatles record and the release of Anthology! I couldn't believe that. 1970 to 1995 is only 25 years, but 1995 to 2025 is 30 years. It seemed totally wrong, but them's the facts!

Not that I would ever compare myself to the Beatles...

    4. What you've done, Ernie, is remarkable. You were the very first Xmas vinyl sharing site that I found—and not only are you one of the survivors, but you're going stronger than ever.

Think of the others from the glory days that have disappeared: FaLaLaLaLa, Cheerful Earful, Hi-Fi Holiday (I miss Ryan!), Christmas Shareo forum (Livin2Large, katydidit, ohgreatone), Dave's World, Big Balls of Holly, Hooked On Stereophonic, Christmas Forever, Yule Blog, Bongobells, A Party in Suburbia, Stax O' Wax, Dartman's World of Wonder, Kelly’s Lounge Soundz, Easy Stackin', Tuna Melt, Sanity Claus's Shanty...and hey, PDMan, where are you?!

We still have Buster and MYPWHAE, and they are wonderful and essential—but you're the king of them all.

  5. One of the best Ernie, an album worth listening to over and over each year.

    1. Did you compare it to the original RCA version? Usually a re-recording like this isn't as good as the original, even if it is in stereo.

    2. No. I read there was an original recording, but did not realize there was a link.

    3. The blog is full of surprises. Here's the link to the post of the earlier version, you'll have to go in the comments over there to find a working download link, but it's there.

  6. Thanks for the link. I also just located it in one of your replys. So I will add it to my current queue.
