Nutcracker In July 08

Are you ready for your nutcracker tracks of the day?  Bit of a weird one today, though.  It's five tracks, and they've skipped a few of the usual suspects.  No Miniature Overture, no Chinese or Russian Dances. And there are dropouts like crazy, so let me apologize in advance. Oh, also, you get to hear about Tin Flutes instead of Toy Flutes. No Reed Pipes anywhere to be seen. It's just a mess all around.  The artist is Ira Wright And His Orchestra and the LP is Tchaikovsky: Nutcracker Suite; 1812 Overture (Bell SBLP 32, Stereo, 1961).  I'm sure I don't need to tell you this is a budget release. Enjoy, if you can.

    Hahaha! Thanks, Ernie.

  2. It really does sound bad. I was trying to listen as I posted it, and it's just horrible. I can't imagine it's all because the record is beat up, I think it's just a poor recording.

  3. Haven't yet listened. Gonna have to - given this high recommendation! May make one of my Leon Day mixes in the future if it's so outstanding...!

  4. I have to listen to this, for a few minutes anyway.

  5. Well, it certainly the worst-recorded version I've heard. Everything is either over on the left or over on the right until you get to the Waltz of the Flowers, when some of the harp notes are on the left and some on the right. A strange recording.

  6. The recording isn't up to today's standards, but the performance is really pretty good all things considered (then again, I listened to it thru my computer speakers - - low tech to the max). Too bad they chose to include only 5 of the pieces of the suite. Oh well, when do we get Spike Jones version? (Just kidding). Burt

  7. Love the Spike Jones version, but I don't think I've seen that one on vinyl anywhere ever. Maybe on 78 somewhere... Close second is Fred Waring, which I shared many, many years ago. Lot of similarities between the two in my mind, but that's probably because they're both funny. After that, maybe Les Brown's Music for Moderns version, which is certainly not the whole thing, just pieces here and there. After that, they kinda all descend into sameness for me...
