Ernie Wants

I've been thinking for a while about creating a list of Christmas records that I'd like to find, and sharing it with the world, in case someone stumbles by and happens to have an extra copy of, oh say, Ed Sullivan's Christmas album.  I know it's unlikely, but it's possible.  And if you don't know what I want, then how do you know I want it.  Let me see if I can't think of a few things off the top of my head here, and I'll try to update the list as I think of new things.

The De Paur Chorus-The Spirit Of Christmas/God Is With Us, Columbia CL 725
Ed Sullivan-Music Of Christmas, Columbia CS 9543 (even mono would tide me over a while...)
The Quinto Sisters-Holly Jolly Christmas, Columbia CS 9054 (Stereo, please, and any of their non-LP singles) Found the LP up in St. Pete in the dollar bin.  I might need a nicer cover, though.
James Brown-Any of his Christmas vinyl, I don't think I have any...
Del Reeves-Santa's Boy, United Artists  UAS 6528 (my copy is pretty hosed...)
Ferrante & Teicher-Adventure In Carols, Westminster WP 6021 (nope, never run across one!) Got it at the Goodwill store yesterday!  $0.99 + tax!
A Big Christmas Album For Merv Griffin & TV Family, MGM SE-4401 Scored this one!
The Brothers Four-What Child Is This/Christmas Bells, Columbia 7" 45, 4-42235 (Already had it in the collection but didn't know it!)
Truman Capote-A Christmas Memory, United Artists UAL 9001 (does this exist in Stereo?)
The Beers Family-Christmas With The Beers Family, Columbia Masterworks MS 6935
Ken Darby-The Spirit Of Christmas, Decca DL 8939
The Glad Singers-Swing Bells, Columbia CL 2391/CS 9191
The Ames Brothers-The Sounds Of Christmas Harmony (Coral CRL57166, the original, not the Vocalion release)
Guitars, Inc-Guitars At Christmas (Warner Bros)
Bonnie Guitar-Merry Christmas From Bonnie Guitar
Seeburg Background Music-The Sound & Color Of Christmas (Stereo, please!) Found it!
Jan Garber-Christmas Dance Party (in Stereo) or any of his earlier Christmas stuff
The United States Air Force Presents Christmas (Featuring The Airmen Of Note, Nancy Wilson, The Doodletown Pipers, 1967)
Marcy Tigner-Christmas Is On It's Way With Little Marcy (Word, 1969).  Yes, she had two Christmas albums!
Axel Stordahl-Christmas In Scandinavia (Decca DL78933, 1959).  I'd prefer the Stereo, but I could live with a mono if need be.
John Facenda-The Nativity (RCA Victor LOP-1504, 1958)  The voice of NFL Films does Christmas.
Marais And Miranda-Christmas With (Decca DL 9030, 1955)

Keep in mind, I can't pay you a fortune for any records.  I'm big on trading.  I've got a huge collection of records, and many duplicate copies of things.  Need a copy of Christmas At Radio City Music Hall, the big fold-out one with a giant picture of the Rockettes?  Got four in stereo, a couple more in mono.  Why?  Someday I might find someone who needs one, and I'd like a copy of Giselle MacKenzie's Christmas LP on Vik, not RCA.  That's the sort of trade I'd love to make.  :)  And I don't need mint copies of things, either.  It needs to look decent, but I can work wonders sometimes with old vinyl.  It just makes me happy to look at it sometimes.  :)

PS-I'm talking about hard copies here, not MP3s.  There's plenty of stuff I have MP3 copies of, but I like to be able to hold things in my hand, turn it over, read the label, smell the old dust, you know.  Maybe I'll start a second list of things I'd like to hear or own, but I'd eventually want a hard copy anyway.

Drop me a line at ernienotbert (at) gmail (dot) com if you've got something I might need!

  1. Is the Quinto Sisters LP or Ferrante & Teicher record the Holy Grail of Xmas albums? Either way, good luck with your quest. Certainly, I would also be happy with a copy of either one.

A few weeks ago, I was elated to find a A Ding Dong Dandy Christmas in Living Stereo. Then, I looked at the vinyl. The quest continues.

  2. I don't know if I'd label either of those as The Holy Grail. I think I'd reserve that title for the J's With Jaime-Cool Yule, but that's really in a whole class by itself.

Took me a long time to find a copy of Ding Dong Dandy Christmas, and when I did, it was mono. Somebody finally sent me a copy in stereo (thanks, King!), but I've since found a couple on my own. All things come to those who wait. :)

  3. Trade? For an autographed photo of Albert?

  4. I have the Del Reeves in mono (no extras); would love to find a stereo copy, though.

My Holy Grail would be the Vaughn Meader "St. Nick Visits The White House" single from 1963. And I don't need the original vinyl; I'll be happy to take it as a bonus cut on a CD. And, here, I've got my hopes flowing once again, because the original First Family albums are being re-issued this year (50th Anniversary Edition). Would it really be so much to ask to have the Christmas single tacked on? Please, please, please, please, please. (The press material does say "plus bonus material" afterall). Look for it this November.

  6. @Stubby, were there more than one "First Family" albums? I've only ever seen the one (of which I have a copy) but I thought that came out in mid-'63, and it disappeared after Nov. 22 that year.

  7. Here's one that you don't want.

  8. Hey, Jeep,

There were two First Family albums. The first was released in November 1962. The second was released in the Spring of 1963. The Christmas single was released mere days before Kennedy's assassination and was immediately pulled. Both First Family albums have previously been released on CD--both individually and as a one and then a two disc set. A new two disc set is coming in November (the 50th Anniversary Edition) and they do say "plus bonus material", but chances are the Christmas single won't be on it. Which is such a shame. The First Family LPs, of course, were on Cadence while the Xmas single was on Verve.

  11. @Stubby, thanks for the info. I hadn't known there were two albums. The one I have says it was recorded in October 1962. I don't know if it was the first one or not.

Interestingly, the liner notes have Chuck McCann in one of the skits. He was a large part of several of David Frye's satirical albums, too. Of course, he was also the "Hi, Guy!" character in those commercials for something-or-other, where the "new, modern apartments" have the medicine cabinet accessible from either apartment, way back in the late '60s or early '70s.

  12. Dear Ernie,

I have a stereo copy of Del Reeves Santa's Boy that I would sell to you for $15.00. It is in very good condition and the cover is very clean except for about a 1" square area that has been gouged.

    Sincerely,
    Jerry in Omaha with Warren

  13. Thanks, Jerry, but that seems a bit much.

  14. Back on the 'First Family' topic; there were actually 2 different presidencies satired by them; the first, and obviously the one everyone's mentioning, is the Kennedy presidency; there's also one for the Reagan administration, which is well worth seeking out. Hearing Ronnie explain the economy based on pieces of apples is hilarious!

  15. Hey, Ernie. A quick message from the guy that shot you the link of Eileen Farrell the other day; I have 2 other lps I am planning on having remastered (hopefully) before Christmas and I was wondering if a) you already have them and/or b) if you would be interested in them. They are:

    Felix Vance - 'Christmas Chimes'
Various Artists - 'Merry Christmas To You' - one of those Hollywood records artists compilations that don't really tell you who's singing what...if you know releases by catalog #, or look items up that way, the # on this one is LPHX-203. The year of release (lovingly written in in pen by a previous owner, Mrs. Jack Mazza, states 12/21/57, so you can get an idea of what might be included. Let me know either on here, or if you kept my e-mail address from our prior transactions. Thanks, and can't wait to see what you've got in store this year!

  16. I've got one you might want, even though it's newer...how about "A John Schneider Christmas"?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Got it, thanks. :) I think I may even have a Tom Wopat song somewhere. I know I've got a CD of non-Christmas stuff from him, but I have some vague memory of a Christmas song...

  18. I sent you an email offering to send/trade you the Ed Sullivan in stereo, the Quinto Sisters and the Gisele album on Vik. Did you get the email?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, I got it and I responded. You didn't hear back from me? I just tried it again.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ok...I've sent you my work email and hopefully no grinch will stop our communication...
    Thanks!

  22. Ernie, do you have (or does anyone out there have, or know where I can get) a copy of Frank DeVol 'The Old Sweet Songs Of Christmas'? I don't necessarily need the vinyl - an MP3 would be just fine. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Here's another in the seemingly ever-growing list of 'Ernie, do you have's' list...anyone got the Longines Symphonette's vinyl box set 'Christmas At The Fireside'? Songs from my childhood that have eluded me over the years...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, I have both the Frank DeVol and those box sets of records. Not something I'm sharing, unfortunately. They're both thrift store staples, those box sets especially. And I think the Frank DeVol was shared out over at FaLaLaLaLa a couple years ago.

  25. All these 'Ernie, do you have...' questions prompted me to submit one of my own...E. Power Biggs 'Music For A Merry Christmas'???

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey, Ernie; I know you want physical copies of the items on your list, but if your collection is missing ANY version of the Ed Sullivan Christmas album, I can send you a link for an MP3 copy until the real deal comes along. Lemme know!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks for the offer, but I've got the MP3s. In fact, I now have a hard copy thanks to one generous reader, but I haven't had time to do anything with it. I want to listen to it and make sure it's up to snuff before I take it down off the list.

  28. Thanks for all the great music. I came across a nice clean stereo rip of the Jan Garber Christmas Dance Party lp. http://www56.zippyshare.com/v/45927003/file.html

  29. Thanks for the link, but I've got a stereo rip, I'm looking for a hard copy. I'm funny that way. :)

  30. I wish I'd have checked this a few months ago. One of the local thrift shops accumulated a huge amount of LP's and had to clear them out, 4/$1. They had multiple copies of the Ames Brothers, possibly a couple others on your list. They always have 1/2 off coupons so each LP would have been 12.5 cents. For that price I would have bought up multiples and sent them to you. Unfortunately, they've been cleared out. All they had a couple weeks ago were Johnny Mathis, Johnny Cash and a couple Firestone albums.

  32. Thanks for the pointer, but I found that one sometime last year. I really need to update my list, I've got almost everything that was on here except some singles. Maybe I can get to that after Christmas when it's too late for all my Christmas visitors to see it. :(

    ReplyDelete
  33. Are youmstill looking for the John Facenda-The Nativity album?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Nope! Got a copy on RCA and an original on whatever local label it originated on. Got it right after they re-released it to MP3, but it's nice to have anyway. I really gotta redo this list before my audience goes away...
